External Law Enforcement Engagement
The Columbus State Police Department routinely coordinates with law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels. But what if you are directly approached by a member of an external law enforcement agency in your duties as an employee of Columbus State?
While the college is a public institution, it is historically highly unlikely any law enforcement agency will engage on Columbus State property without coordination with college police. But if for any reason you are approached by external law enforcement without a Columbus State police officer present as a facilitator, please calmly inform them it is college protocol to work through our police department and that you will contact us to make the connection.
Examples of possible agencies:
- Columbus Police Department
- Ohio State Highway Patrol
- The Federal Bureau of Investigation
- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
Steps to take if approached independently by an external agency
- Calmly relate that it is college protocol for employees to engage Columbus State police if approached by external law enforcement. Ask for a moment to contact college police so that an officer can come over to provide assistance.
- Relate agency name and agent(s) present by calling police dispatch at 614-287-2525. If asked, offer CSPD’s phone number and/or department location to agent(s) to otherwise facilitate connection.
- Ask agent(s) to wait briefly for our police officer to arrive. If asked questions in the meantime, reiterate the college’s policy that our police force be present and involved in any external law enforcement inquiries to ensure appropriate assistance and compliance with federal student records protections. If needed, say it is not your intention to obstruct the agency’s process, and that our police will be present soon.
