Sustainability in action

Update | Monday, February 10, 2025

Columbus State’s sustainability efforts continue to grow through the efforts of the Sustainability Committee and the Sustainability Group. Together, they are working on internal sustainability topics for the college and providing opportunities for students, which will include a Columbus Campus courtyard tree planting event on Earth Day.

The Sustainability Committee, hosted by Facilities Management, includes college staff and faculty. The committee works to address sustainability in campus operations related to a variety of topics including waste, recycling, energy, transportation, resource management, and more. Examples include new recycling stations for batteries in multiple locations throughout campus. The stations discuss fun topics like water and energy management, recycling, and more. This group includes representatives from 12 functional and academic areas. The committee’s next meeting is Thursday, Feb. 20. If you are interested in joining, please contact Dottie Franey, senior advisor, at dfraney1@cscc.edu

The Sustainability Group is a student club providing opportunities to students and staff related to the three dimensions of sustainability: environmental, social, and economic. This semester, the group is hosting four meetings and continuing to share resources and opportunities in weekly newsletters.

Last semester, the group was selected as one of ten recipients of the Youth Climate Action Fund grant from the City of Columbus, which funded a fall campus tree planting. It will also fund a campus tree planting on Earth Day on April 22. Faculty and staff are invited to join the next meeting on Friday, Feb. 21.  If you are interested in getting more involved, join the Sustainability Group on CougarConnect, or contact Jennifer McCord, assistant professor of Marketing, at jmccord6@cscc.edu. The group welcomes new advisors and referrals for student officers.
