Golden anniversary of Title IX

Update | Tuesday, June 21, 2022

Thursday, June 23 marks the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Passed as part of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in education programs and activities supported by federal funding. While Title IX was designed to extend civil rights and protection from discrimination to girls and women in all aspects of education, the legislation applies equally to all members of our college community.

Title IX was the signature legislative achievement of Patsy Mink, the first Asian American woman to serve in Congress and the first woman of color elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Earlier in her life, Congresswoman Mink was denied admission to medical school because of her sex, so she attended law school instead. This experience inspired her to work for equality for women in education. Title IX was renamed the “Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act” after her death in 2002.

Title IX guarantees equal opportunity in athletic and academic program participation, requires educational institutions to address sexual harassment, and requires the provision of appropriate academic support to pregnant and parenting students. Although Title IX is student-focused, it also requires educational institutions to address concerns of sex discrimination directed toward employees and others affiliated with the institution.

At Columbus State, the Office of Equity and Compliance addresses concerns of sex discrimination involving our College community and provides appropriate supportive measures for pregnant and parenting students to facilitate student and employee success.
