Looking ahead: impacts of elevator modernization

Update | Tuesday, February 15, 2022

Later this year, the College will implement a months-long elevator modernization project. It will begin late summer or early fall and include elevators in six buildings.

Four of the buildings – Franklin, Aquinas, Rhodes, and Madison halls – have only one elevator each. Those buildings will be in Phase 1 of the project. The College is working closely with the Columbus Division of Fire (DOF) to file the required "Impairment Plans." Since the DOF is a first responder during an emergency, the Impairment Plans notify them of the periods when an elevator will not be operating.

Phase 2 will follow in Nestor and Davidson halls, which have multiple elevators. As such, one elevator will be modernized at a time, allowing continual elevator access.

The Facilities Planning, Design & Construction Department will publicly bid the work this spring before entering into contracts for the elevator modernization project. Working with the Offices of Equity and Compliance and Testing and Accessibility (formerly Disability Services), the College will reach out to faculty, staff, and students to seek special service needs during periods when an elevator is out of service. Occasional updates will be provided on the planning process and the specific timelines for the work in each building once it is determined.
