Active time for Medical Assisting Technology

Update | Thursday, August 19, 2021

The end of the semester marked a busy time for the Medical Assisting Technology (MAT) Department. On August 9, Medical Assisting students participated in a hiring fair organized by Career Services and Instructor Kristy Deck, CMA(AAMA). Columbus State’s MAT has a distinguished reputation with Central Ohio employers who signed on to provide recruiters for the event. It also allowed students the opportunity to demonstrate their enthusiasm and professionalism.

Medical Assisting is one of the fastest-growing professions in medicine. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021, Occupational Outlook, the projected growth rate is 19% through 2029, with 139,200 new jobs expected. “I have more job opportunities than I have students to fill those positions,” said Professor and MAT Program Coordinator Fauna Stout, CMA(AAMA). “The students coming from this program are in high demand. That’s why so many employers are willing to participate in the yearly hiring events.”

On August 11, the Medical Assisting took part in the MAT Certificate Ceremony. Speakers included Michelle Heller, a former MAT ACF, and Steve Zortman, RN, PMH-BC, CMA(AAMA). Heller works for National Health Career Association as an allied health content strategist. Zortman will receive his Bachelor of Science in Nursing this year. He credited the College’s Medical Assisting program for launching his career in the medical field.

The MAT Certificate Program is a three-semester plan to embark on a new career.  The MAT ATS Degree involves two additional semesters for completion. Students interested in the Medical Assisting Technology can contact the program coordinator, Fauna Stout, at fstout@cscc.edu.

Note: The CMA (AAMA)® credential designates a medical assistant who has achieved certification through the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
