Call for volunteers: Generation One Trailblazers advocacy group

Update | Tuesday, February 2, 2021

The Generation One Trailblazers (GOT) is a resource group of faculty members who aim to serve first-generation students: those who are the first in their family to attend college. Approximately 30% of Columbus State students are first-generation. Though ingrained with many strengths such as perseverance, grit, and courage, first-generation students often face obstacles. Those obstacles can hinder college success, such as the absence of familial support, inaccurate college expectations, and lack of procedural knowledge.

GOT is actively seeking volunteers to serve as GOT contacts – faculty members who agree to be advocates for first-generation students to help them succeed.  At a minimum, you will be given access to resources that can help your first-generation students achieve success.  For those who want to be more involved, there are opportunities to assist with events, including the annual First Gen Day celebration. And there are initiatives, including a mentor program and scholarship review committee.  The goal is to cast a wide net of faculty support across the College for our first-generation students.

If you are interested in joining, please complete this sign-up sheet.  If you have questions, please email GOT@cscc.edu
