Director of libraries retiring August 31

Update | Tuesday, August 11, 2020

Photo of Bruce MassisAfter nearly 15 years in his role as director of libraries at Columbus State, Bruce Massis will be retiring on August 31. He began on December 1, 2005. “My goal in entering this position was to develop the library into a safe, friendly, and welcoming place where students and faculty could engage in their academic pursuits in partnership with library staff who are sharp, engaging, and knowledgeable,” says Massis. During his tenure, the Library, also known as Columbus Hall, underwent an extensive multi-million dollar renovation. Prior to the construction, visits to the Library averaged about 9,000 per month. That all changed afterward, says Massis. “Having enhanced its services based on interactions and desires with students, faculty, and staff ahead of the renovations, visits vaulted to 9,000 per week. I am very proud of my excellent staff, who are loyal to the College, its students, and faculty for such success.”

Massis was the accreditation liaison officer and also played key roles in a number of College initiatives and projects including Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, chair of the Statewide Ohio AQIP Coalition, member of the Textbook Affordability Committee, member of the 1% of Art Selection Committee, member of the Digital Arts Festival Committee, and master of ceremonies for the Quality Recognition Awards.

Massis has a Master of Arts from Adelphi University, Master of Library Science from Queens College, and a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Staten Island.

After retirement, he will be joining family in Florida and New York, splitting his time between both places. And he will continue to work as a Peer Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and will continue to write professionally. He has written or edited nine books and more than 50 professional articles, which have been cited in articles by more than 275 professionals.
