Nominations needed for annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration

Student News | Monday, November 18, 2024

(Dec. 16 update: An additional award has just been added. The Napoleon Bell Sr. Award will be presented to a student and an employee at the MLK celebration on Jan. 22. Use this form to nominate someone.)

Every year, in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the college honors one college employee and one student for their leadership and commitment to creating a diverse campus culture. Originally called The Visionary Dreamer Award, the honor was renamed in recent years to reflect two members of our community who exemplified the important work of King, Barb Smith-Allen (employee), and Darius Torrence (student).

Electronic nominations can be submitted via email before Jan. 8, 2025. Questions about this award can be sent to the co-chair for the Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, Dana Cummings, executive assistant, at dcummings20@cscc.edu.

Nominees must make significant and lasting contributions to continue to create an environment where diversity is honored and respected on campus and within the broader community. Nominations should describe how the individual or group accomplished one or more of the following:

  • Initiate or engage in activities that positively impact the educational, social, economic, or political life of the community.
  • Contribute to the achievement of self-determination by individuals or groups.
  • Display creativity, determination, and perseverance in achieving human and civil rights goals.
  • Establish an ongoing program or institution for the improvement of human relations and civil rights.
  • Exemplify the nonviolent philosophy of Martin Luther King, Jr., and other nonviolent activists in the quest for improved human relations and civil rights.

Winners will be announced at the annual keynote event for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day held on Jan. 22, 2025 from 10 a.m. to noon.
