Avoiding cyber grinches: Protect yourself

Student News | Monday, December 2, 2024

The holiday season is a prime time for shopping and, unfortunately, for scams and fraud. Scammers frequently disguise their activities as holiday sales, charity appeals, or promotional offers. They take advantage of people who are distracted by holiday cheer, last-minute purchases, and the rush to snag the best deals.

Protect yourself by following these five simple but effective cybersecurity practices:

  • Think Before You Click:
Avoid clicking on suspicious links, especially in holiday-themed emails.
  • Use Strong Passwords:
Ensure your passwords are complex and unique for each account.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
Add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
  • Monitor Your Accounts:
Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for any unauthorized transactions.
  • Stay Vigilant on Public Wi-Fi:
Avoid accessing sensitive accounts or making transactions over public Wi-Fi.

By staying alert and following these steps, you can enjoy a joyous and cyber-safe season!
