Securing online shopping: Cybersecurity tips for a safe holiday season
Student News | Monday, December 11, 2023
Columbus State’s Information Technology Security Office has new tips to protect yourself this holiday season by prioritizing cybersecurity.
During the holidays, online activity increases with more shopping. Don't let cybercriminals ruin your holiday cheer. Safeguarding personal and financial data helps prevent identity theft, fraud, and other cyber attacks that peak during this time.
Here are four cybersecurity best practices to help protect you during the holiday season:
- Use Secure Wi-Fi
Avoid using public Wi-Fi. Instead, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or your phone's hotspot to ensure a secure and private connection. - Use strong passwords
Use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters in your password. - Use caution
Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true. - Monitor your accounts
Check for any suspicious activity and report any unauthorized activity immediately.
Visit IT Security Best Practices and Phishing for additional information. If you get a suspicious email, report it. Email abuse@cscc.edu, or call the IT Support Center at 614-287-5050.
