Agreement with Ashland to help Early Childhood Education students

Students will be able to transfer to Ashland more easily

April 30, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

With rapid growth expected to continue in the child care industry, two Ohio institutions of higher learning are partnering to boost success of students already on that career path.  The presidents of Columbus State Community College and Ashland University will ink a deal allowing Columbus State students to continue their education at Ashland’s main campus or at its Columbus Center on East Dublin-Granville Road.

The agreement covers students in Early Childhood Education. It comes at a critical time in the child care industry.  According to the 2008-2009 Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment of child care workers is projected to increase by 18 percent between 2006 and 2016. The report projects 248,000 new jobs in the industry over that decade.  In addition, it says there will be an increasing emphasis on early childhood education programs.

Students at Columbus state who complete an associate degree in the Early Childhood Development Program can transfer most credits to Ashland University to begin working toward a bachelor’s degree.  Ashland offers education programs through doctorate level  making it an ideal transfer school for successful students graduating from Columbus State.  Ashland transfers will also receive additional credentialing in pre-K through grade 3 – a requirement to teach in Ohio’s early childhood classrooms.

Specific details of the new partnership will be available after a brief signing ceremony. It will be held at 9:00 a.m. April 30 at Columbus State’s Child Development Center at the corner of North Grant Avenue and Grove Street in Columbus.
