Health & Fitness Tips:
Finding the Best Exercise for You

Nearly 60% of all people who began an exercise program will quit within 6 months. There are many reasons for this high drop out rate but one of the contributing factors is that many people select exercises that they are not ready for or simply cannot tolerate. In order to remain consistent with physical activity, we must feel confident that we can maintain regular exercise and we must find some enjoyment in the exercise we choose. Too many times we select exercise based on outside influence, such as advice from a fitness professional or sales person at a sporting goods store. Although the advice is not wrong, it is also not correct in terms of individual preference. In order to properly select and maintain exercise, the choice for exercise must be based on individual preference and confidence. Here are some tips for finding the best exercise for you:

Follow your interest
If you like nature or you like to hike, than you will probably want to structure much of your physical activity around walking outdoors and perhaps hiking some of Ohio’s metro parks. A walk on a scenic nature trail will be much more enjoyable than a walk on a treadmill. If the weather is cold, you can simply bundle up and enjoy a winter walk.

Convenience
A busy schedule can make exercise difficult, especially if the exercise is not convenient. For many people, going to the gym after work and spending an hour exercising is simply not possible due to time constraints. Therefore, finding convenient forms of physical activity can be critical to developing and maintaining an exercise habit. One method of finding convenient forms of exercise is to determine when you can add some physical activity in your day and then determine the type of physical activity that would best fit your interests. For example, many people have some time to exercise during lunch but choose not to because they do not want to get hot and sweaty before going back to work. To counter this problem, select moderate exercises, such as walking or a beginners yoga session. These moderate forms of exercise are convenient and will provide significant health and fitness benefits.

Be prepared
Taking exercise shoes and clothing to work can be an excellent method of being ready to exercise when time permits. This not only makes physical activity more convenient, but will also provide incentive to exercise.
