Confidentiality Statement

Overall, the information you discuss is confidential between you and your counselor and his/her supervisor. We will not release any information to any party without your written consent within the limits of the law. There are some exceptions under the law to the above. On occasion, information may be communicated with other appropriate individuals in situations of suspected abuse or neglect of children or vulnerable adults, situations involving potential harm to self or others, or possible court-ordered release of information, including situations of the defense of your counselor/psychologist against misconduct allegations.


Mental Health Counseling

The staff provides one-on-one mental health counseling services to help individuals with academic, emotional, psychological, social, and behavioral problems. It is our basic purpose to help students cope with, or resolve, problems that create distress in daily living and are interfering with academic success at Columbus State. Examples of the problems that we address:

· Eating Disorders
· Physical Abuse/Domestic Violence
· Depression
· Self-Esteem
· Family Conflict
· Loss & Grief Issues
· Attention Deficient Disorder
· Adjusting to Stressors
· Relationship Problems
· Test & Math Anxiety
· Academic Concerns


Alcohol and Other Drug Counseling

The primary purpose of alcohol and other drug (AOD) counseling is to help the student make choices to prevent problems from alcohol use and/or be abstinent from illicit substance use. If appropriate services for treatment cannot be provided at Columbus State, the staff may be able to make a referral to community resources including medical providers, support groups, or other kinds of services.


Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Services

Our drug prevention services are designed to increase awareness, prevent substance abuse problems, or assist those experiencing difficulties. Resources on alcohol and other drug related topics are available in the form of pamphlets, visual aids, and presentations. Available information includes:

*types and effects of alcohol and other drug use
*co-dependency issues
*self-esteem
*impaired driving
*family effects of drinking or using drugs
*stress management and coping
*domestic violence prevention
*social skills
*parenting skills

Crisis Intervention

Crisis-intervention services are offered to students who are experiencing difficulty coping with a situation or stressor. Services may include both stabilization of one’s emotional state and links to helpful resources. The purpose of this service is to help the student with his/her immediate needs by regaining focus and performance in pursing academic and/or personal goals and to enhance the quality of his/her experience at Columbus State.

Consultation and Referral

We offer consultation and referral for mental health and/or alcohol and other drug concerns. Our services are available for students, staff and faculty members.
