Students tour mobile stroke unit

Above: The Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit was parked outside Franklin Hall on Sept. 12 for nursing students to tour.

A lack of blood flow to part of your brain can cause a stroke. That is one topic studied by nursing students in NURS 2873 – Leadership, Role Transition, and Nursing Care of Patients with Multiple Health Problems. Students learn about types of strokes, symptoms, and the importance of early recognition and treatment. The earlier a stroke is recognized and treated, the better the outcome for the patient.

To keep the class active, students had the opportunity to tour the Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit (MSTU) The MSTU is a project shared by OhioHealth, The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, Mount Carmel Health System, and the Columbus Division of Fire. The MSTU brings care providers, diagnostic tools, and treatment to the patient. It is equipped with a CT scanner, lab testing capability, direct access to neurology expertise via telemedicine, and medications to treat stroke.
