Program Overview
The shortage of skilled automotive technicians affects businesses across the nation and right here in Central Ohio. Recognizing the need for a regional solution to help meet the demand for qualified workers, Columbus State Community College has partnered with leading auto dealers including Ricart, Byers, and Germain to develop the Auto Fast Track program.
Auto Fast Track is a one-year technical education program that helps entry-level automotive technicians master new skills quickly while earning an industry-recognized credential that can boost their career and count toward a degree. The program uses a flexible apprenticeship model, which allows technicians to attend Columbus State while they continue their employment. Classes are offered on a consistent schedule, and the faculty in Columbus State's Automotive Technology program are Master ASE Certified and bring many years of industry experience to the classroom.
Program Benefits
Students gain the skills and experience they need to take the next step toward becoming a master technician.
Accelerated, Earn-and-Learn Format
Auto Fast Track students work and attend classes at the same time, which allows them
to apply classroom concepts on the job. Classes are consistently offered on Tuesdays
and Thursdays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., and students earn a certificate within one
year. Additionally, students entering the program with one year of work experience
or prior participation in a career and technical program may be awarded up to six
college credits.
Stackable Credit
Students completing the program will earn Columbus State's Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) Certificate and be prepared for five ASE A-Series tests. Credits earned also count toward an
Associate of Science in Automotive Technology should technicians choose to continue
their education.
Affordable Tuition
Columbus State offers the lowest tuition in the region at $167.93 per credit hour
for Ohio residents. Estimated program costs in 2022 were around $6,000 per student,
including textbooks.
Student Support
Columbus State is committed to helping students navigate college, and advisors work
directly with Auto Fast Track students to provide tailored enrollment, financial aid,
and academic support.

Nationally, there are 75,000 technicians leaving the industry each year. They are only being replaced by 25,000. When there is a shortage in skilled labor, prices go up. We need to ensure an adequate pool of skilled labor within the industry.
