Apprenticeship
Columbus State Community College proudly partners with a number of Registered Apprenticeship Sponsor organizations across the state. A full list of our partner organizations can be found at the bottom of this page.
NOTE: Application to, and acceptance into, any of the apprenticeship programs is solely at the discretion of the registered apprenticeship sponsor and not Columbus State Community College. Students must be currently working in a registered apprenticeship program in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.
These plans of study - certificate and degree - provide an apprentice a viable pathway to obtaining a college degree from Columbus State Community College. Most apprentices will earn as much as half of a two year degree concurrent with their registered apprenticeship experience. Once they have completed their apprenticeship training, they will have 30 or fewer credit hours of General Education and Basic Related coursework remaining to complete their Associate Degree.

Apprenticeship Readiness Certificates
Another aspect of the our partnership with apprenticeships relates to technical courses offered within our Facilities Maintenance, Welding, and HVAC programs. There, individuals can focus on a specific trade skill such as Carpentry, Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, or Welding. These courses are available as open enrollment courses allowing non-apprentice students an opportunity to both explore and/or prepare for a trade.
Because of our partnership with apprenticeships, we know what they are looking for in applicants and, with that in mind, we have created several plans of study to help non-apprentices prepare for application to an apprenticeship program. These certificates can be completed in as little as two semesters.
While we are not able to promise acceptance into apprenticeship, history has shown students who complete the prescribed coursework with high marks are being accepted into apprenticeship positions. Whereas, without this qualifying coursework completed, applicants are often seen as unqualified and are not being accepted as readily.
The apprenticeship programs are looking for individuals with proof of mechanical aptitude, math skills, acceptable grammar, a working knowledge of the trade, teachability, dependability, and an earnest desire to learn. The courses which are part of our Apprenticeship Readiness plans of study give proof to all of the above.
