William R. Murphy passed away Monday, January 2, at Kobacker House after a courageous battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2012 at 11 a.m. at
Christian Life Center, 665 Linnville Road, Heath, with Pastor James Kirk
officiating.

“You could work here for 20 years and never meet Scott Dejane, but all of us depend on him to get our jobs done every day,” says Jim Beidler, director of Information Technology.
“He is a perfect example of a back office employee who toils in anonymity, supporting systems that are absolutely critical to campus operations.”
Dejane, systems administrator in IT, was nominated for Staff Employee of the Year by Shawn Ferguson, supervisor in the Data Center, who says that Dejane can be counted on for help practically 24/7. “There has been many a time when I’d call and ask a question at 12 a.m. and he would reply with an answer, and most importantly, a great attitude,” says Ferguson. “He’s someone who normally wouldn’t get acknowledged for the work he does due to the technical nature, but he’s responsible for most of the servers loaded with our applications that keep CSCC running.”
Dejane was given the January 2012 Staff Employee of the Month Award in a ceremony held Jan. 4 in the Boardroom. He is now the first official staff member in the running for the 2012 Employee of the Year award!
Who will win $1000 scholarships?
The Biggest Learner reality series took place last quarter, matching two academic teams in a competition to raise their combined GPA. Team Swag and The A-Team went head-to-head, competing throughout the quarter, learning new ways to study, and discovering all of the support resources Columbus State offers our students. At stake was a $1,000 scholarship for each member of the team that succeeded in raising their combined grade point the most.

Men’s Basketball Team profiled on CSTV video
The Columbus State’s men’s basketball team started the preseason with a number 10 national ranking and it’s been climbing ever since. Currently ranked No. 4 in the country in NJCAA Division II, the team has a 14-1 record. The women’s team is also doing well with an 11-3 record. Volunteers needed to judge Future Cities!
Columbus State will host the National Engineers Week Future City Competition for the State of Ohio Saturday, January 21, and volunteers and judges are needed for the event.
The Future City Competition challenges middle school teams to create a city of the future. Their model and presentation are evaluated on energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, infrastructure, and other factors. Judges should have training in engineering, architecture or city planning, but there is also a need for volunteers to help with timekeeping and moving the teams and models between the judging stations. Reminder: 2011 Personal Business Leave Forms Due
All Personal Business Leave Forms from 2011 are due in Human Resources by Friday January 13. Unused personal business leave from 2011 up to 16 hours will be paid out in the January 31 paychecks.
Holiday Challenge final weigh-in tomorrow
A reminder to those of you who entered the Holiday Challenge, in which you kept to your diet over the holidays and tried to not gain any weight! The final weigh-in will be held Friday, January 6 from 8-10 a.m. in Rhodes Hall Room 114. If you gained less than one pound over the holidays, you will earn a Dick’s Sporting Goods gift certificate!

Do something great this year…with Weight Watchers! Columbus State will again be offering the Weight Watchers at Work program with convenient Tuesday lunch-hour meetings on campus. We need a minimum of 20 participants to sign up in order to keep this opportunity for our employees. The first meeting is Tuesday, January 10, at 12 p.m. in the DX Conference Room, 3rd floor. Reminder: Last day for Combined Charitable Giving Campaign
With the start of a new year, there are hundreds of families that still could use a hand. Please consider giving to the Combined Charitable Campaign. To date we have $5,395 in pledges. Last year our total pledge amount was $21,700.

Have you heard? Library Open House Jan. 30!
The whole campus has been invited to join President Harrison at the Columbus State Library Open House Monday, January 30, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
The Library has invited all faculty, staff and administrators to the open house and the official unveiling of its permanent art collection. This collection of works, many donated by Columbus resident, Mrs. Ursel White Lewis, includes such nationally known Columbus artists as Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson, Elijah Pierce and Henry Cade Jr.
Much of the work focuses primarily on the Mt. Vernon neighborhood in which the college was built, and visitors will be able to view photographs from the collection of noted photographer Kojo Kamau, offering views from a historical as well as an artistic perspective.
