Union Hall renovation begins during break

An artist’s rendition of the renovated Union Hall, looking east from TL, shows the addition.
Construction will begin December 12 on the addition to—and renovation of—Union Hall. The work will be done in two phases and the building will remain operational during the three and one half year construction period.
Phase I includes the construction of an addition to the west side of Union Hall, and the renovation of the fourth and fifth floors of the building. This phase is expected to take 24 months. The six-story addition will provide for additional classrooms, restrooms, and elevators, as well as new common areas for students.
Phase II will include the renovation of the ground through third floors, with improvements to the existing east entrance to the building.
Union Hall was originally built for $4.5 million in 1975 and contains 100,000 square feet of space. When the project is completed, the building will contain 118,000 square feet with state-of-the-art facilities for anatomy, nursing, and other allied health and human services programs. All of the interior renovation work will be performed at night to reduce disruption to classes and other activities. Questions about the Union Hall construction should be directed to Glenn Smith, project manager, at ext. 5933.

Mathematicians moving on
The Mathematics Department recently held retirement parties for Associate Professor Bill Ferguson and Assistant Professor Victoria Lackey, who celebrated a combined 42 years of service of teaching mathematics at Columbus State!
Ferguson joined Columbus State in 1989 and was instrumental in expanding the Department’s technical mathematics curriculum. Not only is he a mathematician, but he is also an accomplished trumpet player. Lackey taught at Spellman College prior to her arrival at Columbus State in 1991. Her tenure here has been focused on teaching algebra and calculus courses. Lackey has also been active with the Arts and Sciences Lecture Series. Columbus State and the Mathematics Department wish them well in all of their future endeavors!
