As of the official census date of July 11, enrollment for Summer Quarter 2011 was 19,699 paid students as compared to the summer 2010 headcount of 18,444.

Visitors from Korea tour campus
The stifling hot weather didn’t seem to deter a group of visiting scholars from Korea who visited Columbus State yesterday to learn more about American community colleges. The visitors are participating in an exchange program with Ohio State, and expressed an interest in touring an “acclaimed community college." Vanessa Kumar, Office of Diversity, Study Abroad and TRiO Programs leads the tour.
Quality Awards Ceremony gears up for big event
A full house is expected for The Quality Awards on Wednesday, July 27. For the first time, the WD luncheon event is celebrating multiple recognition honorees. Full professors, quality teams, distinguished teachers and employees of the month and year will all take a bow.
Let’s take a look at seven more of the nominated teams up for the CQI Team award:
The Banking Services Team - This team handled all the details to hire a new bank for the college. Savings of up to 50% are expected in the costs of banking services every year.
The Behavioral Intervention Team - BIT was developed in response to the rising trend of campus violence. BIT at Columbus State has been cited by national experts as a model program.
The Career Assistance for Undecided Students Team - This team helps students decide on a major by the end of their first quarter. The goal? Measurable increases in academic success, course completion, and retention.
The Computer Lab ID Team - By enforcing an ID system for computer lab usage, this team reduced paper waste from millions of sheets and improved customer service to current students.
The CCSSE Team - Not only do 95% of our students recommend their school, but 82% feel their teachers are available, helpful and sympathetic. This team managed the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) as well as the rollout of data and its analysis.
The Tutoring Advisory Team - Through a Federal Title III program, Strengthening Institutions, this team is researching and developing a best practice tutoring model for the college.
The Web Redesign Team - Who doesn't love the revamped college website? Today over 3,000 pages are under management with great video and other bells and whistles we've come to expect.
Delaware Campus celebrates first year success
President Harrison thanks the faculty, staff, students and administrators at the Delaware Campus, who threw a birthday party on Tuesday for their first anniversary, complete with party favors, balloons, birthday cake and a big cookout on the patio. OTAP adds Phase 2 to summer apprentice program
OTAP (Orientation to Trades and Apprenticeships Program) is an intensive 10-week program that provides 300 hours of instruction in various trades. The curriculum includes more than 30 hours of sustainability training, with topics including recycling, weatherization, calculating carbon footprints, and the standards for green construction methods in carpentry, cement masonry, roofing, plumbing, electrical and HVAC.
This year, for the first time, OTAP will be working with the Summer Youth Employment Program by adding ‘Phase 2' of OTAP, where the graduates (18-21 years old) will have the opportunity to actually work as an apprentice in various trades areas for 20 hours per week for six weeks. Companies partnering in this apprenticeship program include Renovations Unlimited, Columbus State’s Building Maintenance, Grounds and Building Services Departments, Claypool Electric, Marion Franklin High School, Columbus Parks and Recreation, Waterworks, Accurate Home Improvements, Inc., and Apco Industries.
OTAP summer program participants assemble a picnic table made of recycled materials outside of the Center for Workforce Development.One project this summer for community service had the students designing, building, and installing a “green” picnic table at Columbus State’s downtown campus. The picnic table was made from recycled materials and composite wood.
“This experience has helped me learn teamwork and camaraderie, and has also taught me how to follow direction and be prepared,” said participant, Alphonso Mobley, Jr. Ben McMaken added that the program has given him hope for finding a job and he appreciates the internship opportunity. This is a golden opportunity for anyone who can participate,” said McMaken.
“This program not only gives students a chance to get hands-on experience, but it also gives many kids a second chance in their lives,” said Robert Shannon, OTAP instructor.
Extreme Makeover Home Edition volunteers needed!
Adjunct English instructor Juli Roberts and her husband own P&D Builders, Ltd., the company that was recently selected by ABC producers of the show Extreme Makeover Home Edition to do the construction on an upcoming
episode. In the show, a needy family is selected to receive a complete “home makeover” which includes construction of a brand-new house in the period of one week!
Juli says that volunteers are needed, both skilled and unskilled, to work on the home for the show. The home will be built in one week's time, between August 4 and August 11. The link to volunteer is at the construction company's website here! www.pndbuildersltd.com
