Lifeline Ohio race to cross campus Saturday
Lifeline of Ohio’s “Dash for Donations,” a 5K race and 1K walk will begin in the Arena District and travel right through campus on Mt. Vernon Avenue on Saturday, July 9 starting at 8 a.m., so you might expect extra traffic and road closures in the area if you come to campus this weekend. On the other hand, you can still run in the race if you’d like to – register on race day starting at 6:30 a.m. in the plaza at Nationwide Arena! Our own Clawdette Cougar will be participating in the Kids & Mascots Dash prior to the start of the race.
Quality improvement teams and individuals to be recognized July 27
The winners of the 2nd Annual Quality Team Awards will take the stage at a luncheon on Wednesday, July 27, in the Conference Center Ballroom, WD Room 435. The noon event will also honor our 2010 Distinguished Teachers, Staff Employees of the Month and Year, and winners of a new award for Distinguished Full Professors, in addition to naming the three Quality Improvement Teams that excelled in performance improvement projects over the last year.

The new award for Distinguished Teaching by Full Professors will also be announced at the luncheon July 27. Nominees were: Greg Goodhart, Jackie Miller, Jeffrey Bates, Richard Ansley, Robert Fitrakis, Steve Abbott, and Tom Robbins. The selection committee for this award included: Brenda Johnson, Crystal Clark, Dona Reaser, John Scoville, Li Yang and Tom Shanahan.
Also being recognized at the luncheon are the 2010 Distinguished Teaching Award finalists and winners who were announced at the Spring In-Service program, as well as the Staff Employees of the Month for 2010 and the 2010 Staff Employee of the Year.
Two of the Quality Improvement Teams nominated for the 2011 award are, (left) the Computer Lab ID Quality team, who saved millions of sheets of paper and boosted student satisfaction with a new ID checking procedure. The team includes, from left, Ian Clausen, Aloysius Kiene, Missy Leach, Renee Witcher, TJ Duffy, Chris Miller and Teddy Zeleke. At right is the Banking Services Quality team which includes, from left, Michelle Bernett, Annetta Keller, Brad Farmer, Tonja Morgan, Jan Ellis, and Mikhail Shmukler. By changing school banks, this team saved thousands of dollars and offered new services to staff and students.
ITDL trains to their strengths
The Instructional Technologies Distance Learning team participated in a staff retreat at the Delaware campus last month that focused on team-building and learning about one another's strengths. The retreat was facilitated by Lori McKenzie and Kristi Robbins in HR.
Before the retreat, ITDL employees took the “Win with Your Strengths” class offered by Human Capacity Development to gain a better understanding of their individual strengths. If your department would like to take this class, contact Lori McKenzie at ext. 5212.

Pono Learning Community seeks new members
In 2010 – 2011, 26 people participated in the first Pono Learning Community with representation from students, staff, administrators and faculty. The response to the initiative was overwhelmingly positive, so Kim Brazwell, coordinator in Diversity and Study Abroad is planning to offer the opportunity to students and employees to join Pono in the 2011/2012 academic year.
Pono is a learning initiative designed to provide a space for open dialogue of diversity and social responsibility issues.
According to Brazwell, Pono means “right” and describes that exquisite sense of rightness that comes from being at one with everything. It is based on the ancient Hawaiian belief in spirit greatness and self power, in the unconditional love and compassion for, and the spirit connections between, all things.
During the 2011–12 academic year, Pono will run in two cohort groups: from October 2011 to February 2012 and from February 2012 to late May 2012. It is the participant’s choice as to which cohort will work best for her/his work schedule. Here’s what last year’s participants said about Pono:
“Pono reminded me that I need to do more to be inclusive in the way I do things personally and at work.”
“I learned that I have a long way to go in being cognitive of the various ways people express themselves.”
“It was nice to be challenged by ‘hard’ topics that are often avoided. I loved listening and learning in addition to time to reflect.”
“I learned how much diversity is all around us, literally at each and every interaction.”
“This experience was truly one of the most enriching I have had as an employee. It reminded me of who I am and why I do this work.”

Jazz in July coming July 12
Join Student Activities and Athletics at the annual Jazz in July event, Tuesday, July 12, from 11 a.m.–2:30 p.m. in the Courtyard. Jazz music will be provided by the Joel Steward Trio and Dolly and the Governor, plus free ice cream from Jeni’s! So make sure to stop outside for a relaxing break to your day next Tuesday.
