The Spring Quarter Welcome Team is being held today and tomorrow (March 29) from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. The Welcome Team counts on your support and hopes you will be able to join in the fun as we welcome new and returning students to our Columbus State campus. If you are not able to make it to CT 106 during open times for assistance, we will also provide live online assistance via the WebEx Meeting Center. Latest news from accreditation teams
While March Madness grips much of the college world, Columbus State's three accreditation project teams are also performing at a winning pace!
This year's accreditation projects include Switch to Semesters led by cagy veteran Jennifer Anderson, Helping Students Declare a Major chaired by budding superstar Chandra Bell and Making Sense of CCSSE captained by Greg Goodhart.
Since switching to the newer annual review model in 2006, campus teams have completed seven improvement projects. As outlined by the Higher Learning Commission, the college’s accrediting body, projects must meet a series of quality measures. Bell's project was selected because it has been shown that students with declared majors perform much better than those who are undecided.
"Our Helping Students Declare a Major project is going along really well," said Bell, a counselor in Counseling Services. "It's a big job but we've broken it down into smaller committees." Bell points to the team’s new website as one recent development.
"The team has identified over 120 career pathways from the Career and Technical Programs Division and is currently adding salary information and job titles. It's a work in progress, but I'd say we're halfway there," she said.
Although the three projects are multi-year ventures, the college must report its progress annually to the Higher Learning Commission.
Logistics Jobs Fair matches employees, employers
While Columbus State faculty and students were on spring break, the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Logistics Council used the opportunity to host the fourth, twice-yearly logistics jobs fair. It was held in the Conference Center Ballroom on March 22. More than 390 job seekers attended, and 37 employers exhibited.
"We're very excited about the growth of the Logistics Jobs Fair because it's a tangible example of what's possible when businesses and higher education work together,” said Mary Vaughn, chairperson of Integrated Media and Technology. “The Supply Chain Management program has partnered with central Ohio-based logistics companies for more than a decade to develop the best workforce anywhere. We're proud to support initiatives that further that goal."
Participants praised the event as well. “The Columbus Chamber of Commerce Logistics Council, in partnership with Columbus State Community College, continues to provide numerous opportunities to stimulate the growth of Logistics in Central Ohio,” said Jeffrey Brashares, senior vice president of TTS Logistics in Dublin. “The job fair is just one example of the ‘rubber hitting the road,’ where we enable employers and employees to meet in a neutral learning and hiring atmosphere.”
The next logistics jobs fair will be held in late summer.
Chinese education professionals to visit Columbus State
The Anhui Province in China. The capital and largest city is Hefei.
A delegation of higher education officials from China will be on Columbus State’s campus Tuesday morning. They’re from the Anhui province's capital city of Hefei, in east central China, roughly 300 miles west of Shanghai.
The 20-member group is comprised of higher education officials who are touring colleges and universities across Ohio. Columbus State is one of the final stops in central Ohio.
They are on a fact-fining mission to learn more about how we institute human resources policies including overall HR philosophy, compensation and classification, performance expectations and professional development, orientation for new employees, benefits, and wellness.
Tomorrow’s meeting with Columbus State HR representatives is set for 8:20 – 10:00 a.m. in the Franklin Board Room. President Harrison will also meet with them briefly during that time to welcome them to the college and to present them with lapel pins as a memento.
