President discusses urban development in Columbus Underground
The Creative Campus includes Columbus State’s immediate neighbors, CCAD, the Museum, and State Auto. In red are possible locations for multi-use parking/retail/housing developments.
In Tuesday’s edition of Columbus Underground, editor and 2003 Columbus State graduate Walker Evans sat down with President Harrison to discuss the development of the downtown areas surrounding our campus. The “Creative Campus” includes CSCC, the Columbus Museum of Art, CCAD, State Auto and many other members of the Discovery District. Read what the president had to say about his vision for the future of our neighborhood.

Basketball Cougars now ranked 8th nationally
After beating Cincinnati State last week, 99-82, and Edison Community College on Saturday, 83-67, the Columbus State men’s basketball team (19-3) has moved up in the national rankings from 12th to 8th and is ranked first in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC). They next play Saturday at Owens Community College in Toledo. Go Cougars!
Development Foundation Spring/Summer scholarship listing available to students
Hundreds of wonderful partners and donors in our community have invested in Columbus State, including our own employees. Twice a year the Development Foundation puts these dollars to work by opening the scholarship listing to students for application. There are 60 different scholarship funds in the current listing, and each has specific criteria. There are scholarships for all types of students, from a $500 scholarship for Architecture students with a 3.0 GPA, to a $1,000 scholarship for Chef Apprenticeship students with at least 20 credit hours completed. Some are based on financial need, others on specific academic programs and grades.
Please take the time to view the listing and encourage students you know to apply for a scholarship that might fit their needs. The application deadline is Friday, February 18.
Third floor of ERC closing Friday
Due to the ongoing renovation of the Educational Resources Center (ERC), effective Friday, January 28, the 3rd floor of the building will be closed in addition to the 1st floor, which was closed previously in the renovation process. The East and West entrances to the 2nd floor of the building will continue to be open for service. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Reminder: Women Student Leadership Awards nominations due Thursday, February 10!
March is National Women’s History Month, and each year Columbus State recognizes up to eight of our women students as outstanding leaders. If you know a student who is currently enrolled at Columbus State (Winter Quarter 2011), has a minimum GPA of 2.5, and who sets an example to others as a successful college student, nominate them today for this prestigious award! Nominations are due February 10. The nomination form can be found online here.
The 2011 Woman Student Leader Awards will be given on Wednesday, March 2 at the Women’s History Month Awards Reception, “Our History is Our Strength,” to be held at 12:30 p.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom, WD 435.
Winter Quarter census data shows 4.7% enrollment increase
The preliminary Winter 2011 headcounts and FTE data, as of census date January 17, are now available on the Intranet.
Columbus State’s enrollment stood at 29,607 paid students compared to the Winter Quarter 2010 headcount of 28,261. This represents a 4.76% increase from a year ago.
The total Full Time Equivalent (FTE) count for Winter Quarter 2011 is 19,535.30 compared to 18,717.27 FTE from the Winter 2010 census day report. This represents a 4.37% increase.

Former photography student publishes first book
Wes Kroninger
Former Columbus State student Wes Kroninger (2000-2001) has published a book Wes Kroninger’s Lighting which is receiving rave reviews from the photography industry.
Kroninger got his start in photography at Columbus State and is now a professional photographer in Long Beach, CA. The book is his first publication.
An interview with Kroninger appeared in the May 2010 issue ofthe Profoto-USA.com blog, an excerpt follows:
Kroninger thinks he knows what shaped his photographic career. “I grew up skateboarding,” he recalls. “Skateboarding was always very graphic, and we grew up reading skate magazines and watching videos. I’ve done soul-searching as far as how I see images unfolding. I think it had a lot to do with those magazines. At the time growing up, I wasn’t a visual artist at all. I can’t draw, but I think all those years of seeing all the skate photos subconsciously prepared me for what I ended up doing. I thought I wanted to do product work, like studio commercial product photography.”
Ending up more attracted to shooting people, Kroninger concentrated on portraits, which is what he’s become known for. Originally from Ohio, Kroninger’s wife was working on her Master’s Degree in wetlands ecology, so the couple moved to Louisiana. Now living in Long Beach, California, he has been working with a variety of magazines, bringing his style to assignments under many different situations.
Kroninger’s formal training started at Columbus State in 2000. He studied both color and black and white processing and printing, along with every other photography course offered at the time. With the goal of continuing his training after getting to Louisiana, he and his wife headed south. A quick evaluation of the lack of commercial photography offerings at his wife’s new school changed his mind. Kroninger tried everything he could, learned on his own, and went pro.
