Survey of Student Engagement gives many hints for continuous improvement
Almost one year ago, Columbus State administered the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) on our campus. The results of the survey were compiled and disseminated to participating colleges this past summer.
For years, research has shown that the more engaged students are on their campus, the more likely they are to persist and attain their educational goals. CCSSE is a tool that allows students to describe their level of engagement to their college. Colleges should then use the data as a source in determining steps to increase student success.
College Planning Forum holds first meeting
President Harrison’s College Planning Forum is now under way after its inaugural meeting last Friday in the Conference Center Ballroom. The 44 members represent a comprehensive cross section of faculty, staff and students.
Dr. Harrison proposed the ad hoc group during the Fall In-Service with a mission that is threefold: to look at different perspectives across campus, to connect the work we are already doing, and to help communicate with all college stakeholders.
“What we are doing here will help prepare the college to implement a formal strategic plan,” Harrison told the group.
Forum members were given updates on a range of issues including the search for the new senior vice president of academic affairs, a possible partnership between Ohio State and Columbus State at the Delaware Campus, safety and security, parking and semester conversion. The group will next meet on February 11.

Deadline to petition for graduation approaches
The deadline to submit a completed Petition to Graduate form for Winter Quarter 2011 is Friday, January 14, before 4:30 p.m. in the Records and Registration Department at the Registration Windows in Madison Hall. It is acceptable to submit the Petition to Graduate Form for a student who has pending transfer credit, proficiency credit, prior learning credit, course waivers and/or course substitutions. When submitting the web version of the Petition to Graduate form, please submit the original with two copies. In addition, if you approve the Petition to Graduate form close to the deadline date, please ask the student or a member of your department to hand-carry the completed form to the Records and Registration Department so that it will be received in time. New version of Blackboard is coming Spring Quarter!

Spring Quarter 2011 (March 28-June 11) courses have been created in Blackboard 9.1. If you are ready to begin working on Spring Quarter, you must go through training. Developmental Shells will be moved into Blackboard 9.1 by request once you have completed the BB9 050 Transition Course.

Blackboard 9.1 Training is coming to the Delaware Campus
Instructional Technologies/Distance Learning has expanded the training for Blackboard 9.1 to the Delaware Campus!
“Transition from Blackboard 7.3 to Blackboard 9.1” will be offered next week on Tuesday, January 18 at 3 p.m. in room 245 at Moeller Hall.
“Transition to Blackboard 9.1 Grade Center” will be offered on Wednesday, January 19 at 10 a.m. in room 241 at Moeller Hall.

Mergel recreates Civil War-era surveying
From left, Bob Mergel, professor, and Don Tackett, an adjunct faculty member at CSCC, and other members of his Topographical Engineering Unit work to survey a Civil War site using antique surveying tools.Bob Mergel, professor in Civil Engineering Technology, is a member of an educational and living history organization dedicated to the study and dissemination of information concerning the methods, techniques and equipment used for surveying and mapping during the American Civil War.
Mergel’s “Topographical Engineering Unit” travels all around the country and does living history events and reenactments. The members have period-correct uniforms, weaponry and camping equipment, and their surveying and mapping equipment are originals from their own collections or on loan from the Ohio State University and the Franklin County Engineers Office.
Recently Mergel and his unit were featured in an American Surveyor magazine article for participating in the 2010 Surveyors Historical Society Rendezvous held on board the Delta Queen in Chattanooga, Tennessee in September.
At the Rendezvous, Mergel and his team braved 90-degree humid weather in period-correct, wool uniforms, and used original Civil War Era surveying techniques and equipment to locate and map the positions of Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge and Chattanooga Island in the same manner as the Union Topographers during the Battle of Chattanooga in November of 1863.
“Since elementary school I’ve always loved history,” said Mergel. “If I hadn’t become an engineer, I would have been a history teacher!”
