Distinguished Teachers, Staff of Year named at annual celebration
Four faculty, one staff member and three teams were recognized with awards at the annual Columbus State Employee Celebration held June 4 at the Columbus Athenaeum downtown.
Nominated by their students and selected by a committee of Master Teachers, the Distinguished Teaching Awards went to: Adam Keller, fulltime faculty member in the Physical Sciences who teaches organic chemistry; Bert Vonderahe, adjunct faculty member in Landscape Design/Build, who teaches Landscaping for Homeowners; John Wallace, fulltime faculty member in the Developmental Education Department who teaches mathematics; and Tina Berry, fulltime faculty member in the Nursing Department, who teaches primarily obstetrics and medical/surgical nursing.
The Staff Employee of the Year is selected by the President from the 12 monthly award winners in the previous year. This year’s Employee of the Year is Heather Crites, multimedia database web developer in the Instructional Technologies and Distance Learning Department.
The Continuous Improvement Team Award is new this year, and recognizes teams that have enhanced or improved a process at the college. This year’s gold winner was a team from the Testing Center, which revamped the testing process to reduce waiting times for students from hours to minutes. The team was led by Michelle Teasley, supervisor of the Testing Center.
Two silver awards were given to a team that led a credit bank conversion for students and a team that provided education, preparation and prevention for the H1N1 flu virus this past winter.
Alumni expert networks in community
Elissa Schneider, coordinator of Annual Giving in the Development Foundation, worked on eight alumni networks and established seven new scholarships in just two months, according to Andy Laux, who nominated her for Staff Employee of the Month earlier this year. “She promotes Columbus State at networking events throughout the fundraising community in Central Ohio,” he stated in his nomination.
“She also coordinates alumni open house events to bring back former students to support the program,” said Laux.
Schneider was given the Staff Employee of the Month award for June in a ceremony last week, where Matt Kelly, executive director of the Development Foundation said “Elissa does a lot more than just Taste the Future, which everyone recognizes. She did three websites for us and created an alumni network for technical programs on Facebook and Twitter. Alumni giving is up 20 percent, and due to the new websites, web giving overall is up nearly 200 percent!”
“One thing not many people know is that Elissa was a student trustee at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti,” added Kelly. “She knows a lot about working with boards, even from her student days.”
Schneider has worked at Columbus State since 2006. Prior to that she worked in the field of political and campaign fundraising. She says she likes academic development a lot better!
