Lloyd attends conference to preview new performance

Columbus State Concert Band Director Thomas Lloyd recently attended the Western Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association at the University of Nevada-Reno.

Columbus State was part of a consortium of 24 schools who commissioned composer Andrew Boysen, Jr. to compose a new piece for band. The work, "Twilight of the Gods," was given its first performance at the conference and the Columbus State Concert Band will give the Ohio premiere on November 30, 2010.

A movie created by graphic artist Erik Evensen is shown while the band performs. The mythological story which combines striking visual images and exciting music thrilled the crowd in Reno and is sure to be memorable for the Nestor Hall audience this fall.

In the most recent Wellness Challenge, which ran from January 11 – March 7, participants worked hard during the worst part of the winter to stay fit. The team results are as follows:

	YWCA to host “New to You” party Looking for an inexpensive way to refresh your wardrobe for the new fashion season while tackling that spring cleaning? The YWCA has the solution to your style dilemma. Rid your closet of any new or gently used accessories you're bored with by donating them to the 4th annual New to You accessory party. You can also attend the event, support the YWCA programs, and find fashion treasures that will re-energize your own closet! Drop off your new or gently used handbags, jewelry, scarves, hats, gloves and sunglasses to sell at the party. You can schedule a home or workplace pick-up by calling (614) 627-1246 or drop off your donation at the YWCA front desk anytime. This ultimate girls' night out will be held, Tuesday, May 11, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the historic YWCA Griswold Building, 65 S. 4th St. Early bird registration is only $25 and available online until May 4, after which ticket price increases to $30. All registrations include appetizers and beverages. All event proceeds will support local women through My Sister's Fund, which provides emergency, no-interest loans to women in the YWCA Residency Program. This program provides housing for single women over 18 who are formerly homeless and struggling with mental illness, as well as low-income women over 18.

Columbus State Community College is committed to going green and continually seeking new and innovative sustainability ideas to reduce energy consumption, reduce solid waste, reduce air pollution and enhance awareness of the importance of sustainability.

The CSCC Sustainability Committee is currently seeking new proposals for sustainability initiatives.

Submit your proposal by April 30 and if your idea is chosen, the college will dedicate the resources to make it happen.

Creating and submitting a proposal is easy!
Go to www.cscc.edu/green and click on “submit a proposal” which will take you to a proposal template. Simply enter your great big green idea and submit it.

How proposals are chosen
The Sustainability Committee will review all proposals and notify the winners by May 30.
