Board votes, Harrison hired to start July 1

The Columbus State Board of Trustees took a vote at a special session Thursday, March 11, and approved the hiring of David T. Harrison, as the college’s fifth president, taking over upon President Val Moeller’s retirement June 30.

All major media were present as the trustees voted unanimously to hire Harrison, 48, vice provost of Regional Campuses at University of Central Florida. Harrison flew from Florida to Columbus Thursday morning to accept the position, with his wife Tracy, sons Sam, 13, Mark, 16, and daughter Julie, 17, by his side.

“President Moeller has been an exceptional leader for Columbus State,” said Board Chair Bill Dolan. “The growth, quality and financial stability of this college make it the pride of Ohio’s community colleges. We are confident that Dr. Harrison is the right leader to fill her shoes. Over the next few months, President Moeller will be working with Dr. Harrison to ensure a smooth transition when he takes over on July first.”

In his acceptance speech, Harrison thanked his wife and family for supporting him in the move to Ohio, and promised to “wake up every day and work to earn your confidence.”

Later Board members and members of the Presidential Search Committee introduced Harrison and his family to the campus community at a reception held in the Center for Workforce Development Conference Center.

President Moeller among seven college presidents named for lifetime achievement
MoellerJackson, MS - Seven retiring college presidents/campus CEOs will be honored with the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award during Phi Theta Kappa's Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida April 8-10. Dr. Val Moeller, who retires June 30, will be among the administrators recognized for providing many years of committed service to Phi Theta Kappa and their campus chapters.

Named in honor of the former president of St. Petersburg College in Florida, Michael Bennett, the award is presented to retiring college administrators for their exemplary dedication to Phi Theta Kappa while promoting the goals and ideals of the Society. The selected administrators have also proven to be commendable supporters of their college's Phi Theta Kappa campus chapters and Phi Theta Kappa regions.

The 2010 Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award recipients are:

Dr. G. Edward Haring, President, Kellogg Community College, Michigan
Dr. Valeriana Moeller, President, Columbus State Community College, Ohio

Dr. Donald Voelter, Chancellor, Blinn College, Texas
Ms. Ann Wynia, President, North Hennepin Community College, Minnesota

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,250 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.

The Columbus State Welcome Team hopes you will have some time to share Monday and Tuesday March 29 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Team counts on your support and hope you will be able to join in the fun as we welcome new and returning students to the Columbus State campus.

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day planned for April 22
Program limited to first 30 to apply
logoColumbus State will participate in the national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day on Thursday, April 22. As many as 30 sixth, seventh and eighth graders who are children of employees or sponsored by an employee may participate.

According to the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day organization, the day is “designed to encourage girls and boys across the country to dream without gender limitations and to think imaginatively about their family, work and community lives.” Columbus State will provide youth participants:

  1. employee and child

    A first-hand experience to learn what their Columbus State sponsor (Mom, Dad, Uncle, Aunt, etc.) does at work;

  2. Exposure to some career activities and exploration through a variety of Columbus State academic programs;

  3. A fun way to learn about careers, college and Columbus State.

The day will begin promptly at 8 a.m. when youths and sponsors gather for breakfast and a career exploration activity. Then, while sponsors return to work, volunteer guides will lead the youths to various workshops on campus. Sponsors and kids will gather again for lunch and activity at noon and then return together to the sponsor’s work area. There may be a campus tour opportunity in mid afternoon.

The program is limited to the first 30 participants in 6th-8th grade with a Columbus State sponsor. The sponsor must be on campus and available by phone, attend lunch with the participant, and provide job shadowing for the participant from 1-5 p.m.

Complete and submit the registration form and return it to: Susan Thompson, HR, RH-115, no later than April 9. Participants are selected on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on the program contact Rich James in Human Resources (ext. 2175).

graphicColumbus State Community College is committed to going green and continually seeking new and innovative sustainability ideas to reduce energy consumption, reduce solid waste, reduce air pollution, and enhance awareness of the importance of sustainability.

The CSCC Sustainability Committee is currently seeking new proposals for sustainability initiatives.

Submit your proposal by April 30, 2010 and, if your idea is chosen, the college will dedicate the resources to make it happen.

Creating and submitting a proposal is easy!
Go to www.cscc.edu/green and click on “submit a proposal” which will take you to a proposal template. Simply enter your great big green idea and press submit.

How proposals are chosen
The Sustainability Committee will review all proposals and notify the winning submissions by May 30.

Applied Technologies to change name
graphicThe Applied Technologies Program will change its name—effective Autumn Quarter 2010—to Skilled Trades. “Having heard comments from students over the past several years that they couldn't find our trades programs, we went to our partner trades programs and other colleges in the state that have similar programs to get their input,” said Andy Rezin, chair of the program. “The consensus was that Skilled Trades was the best title that would explain the grouping of careers that includes carpentry, electrician, plumber, and heavy equipment operator. These are the trades are served by our partnership programs and our on-campus Facilities Maintenance degree,” he said. “Furthermore, our partners strongly advocated the name Skilled Trades because they believe that it better communicates the level of skills and abilities needed to work in this high-tech, rapidly evolving group of careers.
