Nursing academic coordinator makes “Positive Impact”
Twenty-eight years on the job at OhioHealth in respiratory therapy and recovery room nursing, plus a desire to teach and work with students at her alma mater have made Carol Beneker the perfect ally and advocate for Columbus State nursing students.
Beneker was awarded the February Staff Employee of the Month February 5, where her nominator, Professor Lorraine Boyd said that Beneker is “instrumental in providing nursing students with the opportunity to be successful.”
Beneker works with faculty to identify at-risk students and assists them through obstacles to their success, explained Boyd. “Carol developed the Positive Impact class specifically geared towards helping nursing students in academic danger become their own advocate. She patiently listens to them and lets them explore the many avenues available to develop their self esteem and self confidence,” wrote Boyd.
“As a graduate of the nursing program, (December 2003) Carol can see the situation from both faculty and student points of view,” said Boyd. “Student and faculty alike speak highly of her,” said Jan Wagner, chairman of the Nursing Department. “She has taken a vague idea regarding retention and turned it into a concrete program.”
In her down time, what little of it she has, Beneker spends time with her husband of 40 years, her three grown children and five grandchildren. “I also have a dog named Charlie that flunked obedience school,” jokes Beneker. Maybe “Positive Impact – Canine Edition” could help!
Last Call to join the Sustainability Committee book discussion Members of Columbus State’s Sustainability Committee will host a series of book discussions on Thomas Friedman’s latest book “Hot, Flat, and Crowded” in March. If you care about the environment, the economy, or both, you’ll find this book paints a path for addressing these related issues. Copies of the book will be available for those who wish to join and participate. The following dates are open and space is limited to the first 15 for each session. Each discussion will be hosted by members of the Sustainability Committee in Rhodes Hall, Room 232.

Cost Center Manager Training offered Feb. 24 The Business Services Department will offer a seminar for employees called “Working with Business Services: An Introduction to Business Services-Cost Center Manager Training,” on February 24 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in WD Room 409. The seminar is for cost-center managers, their assistants, and those who work closely with cost centers. Volunteers needed for Central District Science DayColumbus State will host the Ohio Academy of Sciences Central District Science Day on Saturday, March 21. Approximately 500 students from local area middle and high schools will present their science projects in hopes of advancing to the state competition in May. Volunteers are needed to judge these projects and to assist in the smooth operation of the activities.
Judges will be needed during the period from 8 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. If you have never judged before, don’t worry. An orientation session will assist you. All judging is done in pairs and any inexperienced judge will be paired with an experienced judge to help you along.
Additional volunteers are needed to assure smooth operations during the event. Times of service will vary. Volunteers will help students find their display sites, assist in registration, tally up the scores, assist the judges by collecting score cards, and act as hall monitors to maintain order and security. There is a volunteer job for every person regardless of science training.
This is an excellent community service opportunity so come and help Columbus State make it a success.

New sustainability proposals sought by committeeIn November 2007, the Board of Trustees formalized the college’s commitment to sustaining the environment by authorizing Policy 11-1, Sustainability. The policy outlines the college’s commitment to reducing solid waste, energy consumption and pollution. In early 2007 the President joined hundreds of other college and university presidents in signing onto a national Climate Commitment designed to protect our planet for future generations.
A comprehensive energy efficiency plan was approved by the Board of Trustees in November 2008 which includes an array of projects that, when implemented, will reduce the college’s energy consumption by over 20% as mandated by state law and is outlined in on of the college’s five strategic goals approved by the Board in July 2008. A committee has been appointed by the President to assist in reviewing and recommending new ideas. In 2008, the committee received over 25 ideas and several have been implemented or are in the process of being implemented.
The committee is now seeking additional proposals from faculty, staff and students.

Proposal writing workshops:
Brad Farmer, a member of the Sustainability Committee, will host workshops on writing effective proposals on February 25 at 3 p.m., March 16 at 10 a.m. and March 25 at 1 p.m. All training sessions will be held in the Rhodes Hall 211A conference room. In-house sustainability experts will also be in attendance so please plan to bring your idea(s) to one of the workshops to learn more about proposal writing and bounce ideas off our in-house experts.
Proposals ranked highest by the Sustainability Committee will be recommended for implementation. Proposals are due by 4 p.m. on Friday, April 3.
