Basketball team starts season off right

Coach Pat Carlisle and his team keep an eye on the scoreboard at a game last season.

A high ranking will help kick start the Columbus State men's basketball team heading into the new season. The Cougars slip in as No. 4 in the newly released pre-season poll for Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association. Last year, Coach Pat Carlisle took the team to the national tournament for the second year in a row and they finished with an impressive 27-4 record. The previous year his team departed as runners-up in the final championship game.

"These days we are well respected," says Carlisle. "I do think this team has the ability to do what the last two did. It has been our best October in my four years here at Columbus State."

The season opener is November 6 against Mount Vernon Nazarene. The first home game is November 20 during a tournament in the Delaware Hall Gymnasium.

Lehner killed in Afghanistan Jeffrey Eric Lehner, age 26, was killed early Tuesday morning October 13, when his plane crashed after completing a military mission in Afghanistan. After spending six years in the Air Force as an airborne cryptologic linguist and serving two tours in Iraq, he joined the defense contracting firm Sierra Nevada Corporation to perform similar duties in Afghanistan. Friends and family may attend a memorial service to be held on November 14 at 4 p.m. at Genoa Baptist Church, 7562 Lewis Center Rd, Westerville. Internment will occur later in Sunbury Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jeff's name to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, to the Columbus State Community College Jeff Lehner Scholarship fund, or to your favorite charity.

National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development offers abstract on freshmenNISOD’s October 30 issue of “Innovation Abstracts” (username member, password nisod365) offers an article titled: "Terrified Freshman Authorities: A Collaborative Learning Experiment" which describes a project in which students produce a document to orient and comfort other frightened freshmen-a handbook on campus survival.

An excerpt reads: “In my mind, I must have quit graduate school at least 500 times out of fear and frustration. I longed for a written handbook that went beyond the schedule detailing when drafts of my thesis were to be submitted. What I wanted was for a student who had already been through the same experiences to say, ‘I was as scared as you. Here’s what really works.’ And then this imaginary friend would help me get my deadlines in perspective.

Our (CC) students are no different. Here is one way I’ve found to retain “high-risk” students: Give them the chance to produce a document that would serve to orient and comfort other frightened freshmen; make them the authorities of campus survival.”
