Inaugural Discovery District Arts Fest sees big crowds,
hot temperatures

PauletteThis panorama photographed by Paul Rehg during the opening hours of the Arts Festival shows the roomy atmosphere provided by the Discovery District this year.

Paulette Fortea, right, and Barb Smith-Allen tour a colorful artist booth on Friday at the Columbus Arts Festival, after the event kicked off under hot and sunny skies in the Discovery District. The Arts Festival will be held in its new location for at least three more years while construction continues in the riverfront area. Organizers called the event a success, with good crowds, plenty of room to spread out, and excellent, if hot, weather.

Welsh retires from Air National Guard

Michelle Welsh
Master Sergeant Michelle Welsh

Master Sergeant Michele Welsh retired from the Air National Guard on May 31 with 28 years of service. She enlisted in 1980 as an aircraft armament specialist in the 121st Tactical Fighter Wing. For 12 years as a weapons crew chief, she was responsible for the safety and performance of a weapons crew who loaded and armed missiles, bombs, and 20-mm ammunition on A7-D fighter planes. She participated in several overseas deployments including Panama, England, and Italy in support of the Tactical Air Command's commitment. Dr. Welsh is an academic adviser in the career and technical programs at Columbus State.

When the 121st Tactical Fighter Wing converted to the 121st Air Refueling Wing, Welsh was chosen to be the superintendent of the maintenance orderly room, which serves the two largest squadrons on base. She has served in this capacity for 16 years.

Master Sergeant Welsh recently received the Meritorious Service Medal for extraordinary professional skill and leadership. Her commander wrote: “Sergeant Welsh took great pride in her assigned traditional guardsmen and continually motivated her subordinates to attain higher levels of achievement. Sergeant Welsh has proved to be a tremendous professional resource and mentor, and has provided the continuity to lead the Maintenance Group administrative functions through major periods of transition and uncertainty. Her loyalty and military bearing have significantly contributed to the well being of the 121st Maintenance Group.”
