SCHOOL COUNSELORS (updated Feb. 2006)

Welcome, middle and high school counselors! Many of your students are prime candidates for College Tech Prep programs – secondary programs that give students engaging, concrete learning experiences while preparing them for college!
Why is Tech Prep valuable for so many students? Because it combines practical technical skills learning with rigorous college-prep academics, College Tech Prep is a proven choice for a wide range of students, with especially notable success with students in the academic middle. A 2003 review of state and national studies of Tech Prep found that “Tech Prep students were more successful in high school than similar, non-Tech Prep students, and were more likely to enter postsecondary education.”
(Bailey, T. & Karp, M., Promoting College Access & Success. Teachers College, Columbia University, June 2003, p. x.)

Middle School Counselors Tool Kit
Annual Counselors Breakfast: This year's Counselor's Breakfast was held on December 1, 2005 at the Hilton at Easton Center, Columbus, Ohio. This event is the Heart of Ohio Tech Prep Consortium’s annual workshop and breakfast for middle and high school counselors in our service area. Any counselor from any school in the consortium’s seven-county service area is welcome to attend. For information about these events, contact Merry Lee Walters, c/o Ohio University Lancaster Campus, 740/654-6711 ext. 216 or walters@ohiou.edu.
Middle School Counselors Tool Kit: The consortium has worked with the Career Development Specialists at our eight career-technical school districts to design and distribute a Middle School Counselors Tech Prep Tool Kit. The Kit contains a variety of items that can be used to augment career exploration activities at the middle school level, particularly to raise awareness about careers in high-technology fields, the value of College Tech Prep programs starting in Grade 11, and the high school courses in Grades 9-10 that students should include in their ICP to ensure that they are ready for success in those programs.
For information about the Tool Kit, contact the Career Development Specialist at the career-technical school district serving your students (Heart of Ohio Consortium service area). For general information about Tool Kit contents, contact Marcia Key, Tech Prep Development Coordinator, Heart of Ohio Consortium, at key@ohiou.edu or 740/654-6711 ext. 613
