Lincoln Exhibit open in Library, events added to schedule

old photoMore events have been added to the schedule to complement the national Lincoln Exhibition, now open on the second floor! The Lincoln exhibit runs through August 16.

Every other Tuesday in July at 6:00 p.m., the summer ensembles of the Columbus State Concert Band will perform both patriotic and popular music from the Civil War era. Director Thomas Lloyd will provide narration, giving the history of the songs and composers. On July 2, the Saxophone Ensemble will play, then on July 16, the Woodwind and Brass Ensembles will perform together. Finally, on July 30, the ensembles will combine to create a Civil War Band!

The concerts are brief, around 30 minutes in length, and some of the tunes are still well known today, like "America" and "The Star Spangled Banner"—although the latter was not the national anthem at the time of the Civil War. Other songs have faded into obscurity, like "We are Coming, Father Abra'am" and "Just Before the Battle, Mother."

Also, the Lincoln Film Series continues, with a rotating schedule of movies shown in the first floor multimedia studio at 10 a.m. daily. Columbus State faculty will also present a lecture series that addresses the theme.
