Vision of future and master plan shown to local leaders
More than 150 local civic and business leaders and public officials heard visions of the future of Columbus State Wednesday morning as President David Harrison provided an overview of the college’s Master Plan. The presentation was part of the College’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Building community partnerships--along with academic buildings--and removing surface parking while expanding learning spaces, are key components of Columbus State’s plan to move forward in coming years.
The hour-long presentation included compelling animated graphics of how the Discovery District, which includes the college, could be shaped in the coming decades. Dr. Harrison’s concept includes removing surface parking and adding parking garages to make the campus more pedestrian friendly and aesthetically pleasing.
New academic buildings such as a possible School of Business Technologies and School of Hospitality Management are among the concepts. With no specific funding currently available, the college would work closely with area business and civic partners to explore funding options. The addition of parking structures would be a benefit to nearly all partners, whose educational members include Ft. Hayes Career Center to the north, and CCAD and Franklin University to the south.
Several main traffic arteries cut through the Columbus State Campus including Cleveland Avenue and Spring and Long streets. The newly released animated graphics provide a unique vision of what that area could look like in the future!
You can also see an article in Business First with a slide show of graphics from the Master Plan.
A few new FAQs about Day of Service!
Thank you to everyone who has signed up and is working to make the September 26 Day of Service a big success. Every volunteer opportunity has been fully staffed and we are ready to get out into the community and really make a difference at more than 50 locations!
A few changes have been made to accommodate our large group of employees, and these have been added to our FAQs page on the website:
1) The morning meeting location, when we will hear from Dr. Harrison and where everyone will pick up their t-shirts, their information packets, their lunch boxes etc., has been moved outside (from the gym) onto the Courtyard, beginning at 7:45 a.m. Team leaders for each service location will meet with their group at this time to organize car pools or distribute directions. The group from the Delaware Campus will meet in Moeller Hall at 8:00 a.m.
2) A mileage reimbursement plan for those using their personal vehicles has been created, with pre-calculated mileage for each location. For those requesting reimbursement, you will simply fill out the form with the location, and the Business Office will fill in the mileage and reimbursement amounts.
3) The annual flu shots (previously given on In-Service Day) will now be given on Tuesday, October 29, to all employees who sign up, regardless of their health care plan.
A final reminder: Remember to wear your “Making History Every Day” t-shirt to Day of Service, if you got one for the 50th Anniversary Group Photo on August 30. This is the same t-shirt that we will be wearing for our Day of Service!
Rod Harris is described as professional, personable, prompt, and proactive by his nominator for the September Staff Employee of the Month. “We often find he has repaired something before we even get a chance to call it in,” says Kim Hatchet in her nomination. “Rod (maintenance repairperson I) does not wait for things to get to the bad or expensive stage of repair. He thoroughly checks things that are still working to make sure they’re working correctly.”
“Rod is a behind-the-scenes person who makes sure his job is done exceedingly well so that the rest of the team can forget about it,” continues Hachet, who is a supervisor in the Telephone Information Center. “I’m not sure that our trailer is the highest on anyone’s list. Rod inherited a 20-year-old trailer with issues. Hardly a day goes by when he’s not stopping in before we get there to take care of emergency repairs. Things suddenly started working that we had forgotten ever worked! Besides, anyone that has to crawl underneath a trailer to drag out a dead raccoon deserves some recognition!”
Harris was recognized as the September SEOM at First Wednesday on September 4.
