Windows XP users to receive updates Jan. 30
Faculty and staff using Columbus State computers with the Windows XP operating system should plan for an additional 5 to 10 minute computer start-up delay on Wednesday, January 30. Windows 7 computers will not be impacted. (If you are unsure of the operating system you are currently using, the OS Version is displayed at the right center of your desktop screen.)
This is a one-time occurrence that will take place on the first start-up and login of XP computers on or after January 30, 2013. This update will include the removal of Novell Client and could involve up to two automatic reboots depending on software installed on individual computers.
It is very important that you allow the process to complete. The process will automatically start and finish after you turn on your computer and login to the network as you normally would. No further action beyond a normal start up and login will be needed.
There will be messages on the screen that will inform you of the progress and completion of this upgrade and client removal. This change is a required step in the migration of Columbus State to a standards-based Microsoft computing environment.
When the change is completed, the Novell login box will be replaced with the blue Microsoft login screen. If you have questions regarding this change please contact the IT Support Center at ext.5050.
More on Disability Services testing
The Delaware Campus will continue to support and meet the needs of Columbus State students who require testing accommodations as validated through Disability Services.
Distance Learning faculty who have already submitted their test administration form and tests to the Testing Center in Aquinas Hall, DO NOT need to submit the same materials to the Disability Services Office. Their students are responsible for simply reporting to Aquinas Hall with their Letter of Accommodation.

WebEx Meeting Center Basics Training
WebEx Meeting Center is a virtual online meeting room which allows Columbus State employees to hold meetings online. WebEx requires participants to have Internet access and a computer with a microphone and audio capabilities. All communication is done through the computer, whether a desktop pc or laptop. WebEx allows for multiple participants, up to 200, at different locations to connect online and share any document, power point, web site, or other multimedia. Although WebEx has video capabilities, the focus generally is with sharing data and information with participants.

Dietetic students collect for LifeCare Alliance
The Student Dietetic Association will collect hygiene supplies January 22-31 in Eibling Hall, Room 136, to benefit LifeCare Alliance and their Groceries to Go Food Pantry.
Groceries to Go provides groceries, personal hygiene items, and cleaning supplies to individuals of the Project OpenHand-Columbus and Columbus Cancer Clinic programs. These clients are living with HIV/AIDS or cancer. The program serves approximately 550 households per month.
Supplies needed include shampoo, peroxide, conditioner, razors, hair care items, nail clippers, emery boards, rubbing alcohol, household items, toilet tissue, paper plates, soap, toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, lotion, Chapstick, paper towels, laundry detergent, tissues, powder, sanitizers and pet items.

Carringer to present at AACC conference in April
Paul Carringer, assistant professor in Integrated Media and Technology, will present his dissertation at the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) annual convention April 20-23 in San Francisco. His session is titled “Working With and Through the News Media to Advance the Institution: A Study of Successful Presidents.”
Carringer is also a member of the Council for the Study of Community Colleges and will attend their meeting prior to the AACC meeting.
Staff Advisory Council to host monthly lunch sessions
Members of the Staff Advisory Council’s Professional Development Committee will hold once-a-month lunch-hour sessions for professional development, starting with a January 30 meeting on “How to get the most out of your PERFORMs evaluations,” from noon – 1:00 p.m. in the DX Conference Room on the third floor. In the session, participants will learn how to write goals, document performance and get the most from the PERFORMs process. Future sessions will meet on the last Wednesday of each month, with February’s meeting focusing on financial planning, on February 27.
Travel abroad trip to Guatemala provides many memorable moments

Rebecca Mobley, assistant professor of Anthropology and Interim Chair of Social Sciences, traveled with nine Columbus State students and two other college groups to Guatemala over Winter Break. The group returned with a whole new understanding of the need for social justice in developing countries, as well as the desire to start a new student club.
The trip was a collaboration between faculty at Columbus State, Dakota County Technical College in Minnesota, and Cottey College in Missouri. A total of 23 participants traveled together to Central America December 27, returning on January 6.
