Columbus State is gearing up for the Quality Check-Up Visit which will be performed by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in mid-September. Originally scheduled for April 2013, the Quality Check-Up Visit was moved to accommodate the accreditation schedule required by all AQIP-accredited schools. What will happen during the Quality Check-Up Visit? Who will be involved in the meetings? How can you participate? The Columbus State Board of Trustees meeting agendas and meeting minutes have been moved from the Intranet to the Internet, to be fully viewable to audiences outside of the college. (Information on the Intranet can only be viewed when logged onto the college network.) The Board agendas and minutes can be found on the “About CSCC” menu, under Board of Trustees.
Three generations serving students
At Wayne Cocchi’s recent retirement party, he was joined by the previous director of Disability Services, Linda Wetters, center, and the new director, Tiffany McClain, right. Cocchi is retired as of July 1, after serving as director from 1994-2012. He started at Columbus State in 1979. Wetters headed the department from 1979-1994. McClain takes over July 1!
Reminder: College offices close at 4:30 p.m. July 3
College offices at the Columbus Campus will close at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3 due to Red, White & Boom! activities downtown. Classes will be held as scheduled. Also, parking lot 32-S will be closed from 6 a.m. Tuesday, July 3 through 6 a.m. Thursday, July 5 to serve as a staging area for Columbus Police. The Parking Garage will also be closed from 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 through 6 a.m. Thursday, July 5.
Possible COTA strike requires planning
The union representing bus drivers at the Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) has announced it intends to strike beginning Monday, July 2. While COTA administrators and the Transport Workers Union remain in negotiations it’s unclear if a resolution will be made before the strike deadline.
What this means for students, staff and faculty at Columbus State: If you use COTA for transportation to and from the Columbus Campus there’s a possibility the buses could stop rolling as early as this Monday. Now would be the best time to make alternate transportation arrangements in the event a strike takes place. It’s possible a final decision won’t be made until the weekend. Also, please note that COTA intends for Mainstream transportation to continue even in a strike. Mainstream is the service for people with disabilities.

Hear the Gospel Ensemble this weekend
The Gospel Vocal Ensemble will be very busy this weekend. On Friday, June 29, the Ensemble is the featured group for the downtown Summer Concert Series being held on the Statehouse lawn. The event is from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Ohio Statehouse Web site (www.ohiostatehouse.org).
On Sunday, July 1, at 7:00 p.m., the Ensemble will sing backup to national talent, Deana Martin (daughter of legendary entertainer, the late Dean Martin). Ms. Martin will present a patriotic concert entitled, "Red, White, & Big Band." This is a ticketed event being held at the Grand Valley Dale Ballroom. The Gospel Vocal Ensemble is under the direction of Emma L. Easton.
Meet the SEaL team!
Earlier in the spring, the Student Activities Department became Student Engagement and Leadership (SEaL).
The new SEaL team includes (from left) Sabrina Ayers, office associate, Sarah Baker, assistant, Kimberly Rhyan, director, and Heather Borland, assistant director.
The team is busy developing additional leadership and service programs to be offered for the fall semester at Columbus State. SEaL oversees the Student Ambassador Program and the Columbus State Leadership Society, and they are currently planning the annual Collegiate Leadership Conference of Ohio, to be held November 9 and 10 at Columbus State. This year’s focus will be on service, engagement and diversity.

Bicentennial service event kicks off August 25
If you've wanted to give back by volunteering but just haven't found the right time to begin, the Columbus Bicentennial folks have the perfect opportunity for you--the upcoming Columbus Volunteer Challenge, a bicentennial service event.
From Saturday, August 25 through Tuesday, September 11, the City of Columbus and United Way of Central Ohio, along with numerous community partners, will bring together as many as 20,000 community members to make a difference in central Ohio. Volunteers will have fun while working with and for community-minded neighbors and friends to help build a community that is more inspired, proud and engaged.
The final day is open to corporate volunteers, city employees, community volunteer groups and individuals to serve at nonprofit organizations throughout central Ohio.
