The 9th annual Columbus State Writers Conference, to be held Saturday, May 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Columbus State Conference Center will feature a keynote speech and workshop session by Naomi Wolf, author of The Beauty Myth.

Semesters Week coming May 14-18
Another Semesters Week, similar to the one held last fall, is set for May 14-18. Students can attend general information sessions about semesters and demonstrations on running a Degree Audit Report. There will be invited chat periods for online students, too. At Spring Fling on Wednesday, May 16, (May 17 for the Delaware Campus), students will receive “sweet” tips and a new semesters brochure. These tri-fold brochures will be made available to program offices, and the information contained in them will be emailed to faculty and staff in a handout format as well. The specific times and locations for Semesters Week activities will be announced soon. We need your help to finish getting our students “Semesters Ready!”
Seminar offered on Retaining First Generation Students
Are you interested in contributing to the success of first generation students? The Generation One Trailblazers (GOT) team will present an Academic Impressions seminar entitled "Retaining First Generation Students" on Friday, April 27 from 12:30-4:00 p.m. in TL 209. GOT is a faculty driven resource group dedicated to enhancing the academic success of first generation college students here at Columbus State.
The seminar will be presented in two parts and will focus on strategies for retaining students who are the first in their family to attend college.
12:30-2:00 p.m. - Session 1: "Providing Academic Support"
2:00-2:15 p.m. - Break
2:15-3:45 p.m. - Session 2: "Strategies for the Classroom and Beyond"
3:45-4:00 p.m. - Discussion
The event is free, and GOT encourages all to attend one or both sessions as your schedule permits.

Fridays are “Bike Fridays” in May!
May is National Bike Month and Columbus State is participating by sponsoring several ride opportunities culminating in an evening of bike-themed presentations.
If you want to try out bike commuting you may be able to ride in with some regular bike commuters who work at the Columbus campus. If you ride or bring your bike to campus you can join in leisurely lunchtime rides through downtown neighborhoods. If you want to hear or present an idea or story related to bicycling, attend or present at “The Next Big Thing: Spoke and Wheels.” This is an evening of high energy presentations in which presenters work under the constraints of 20 PowerPoint slides and 5 minutes to share a compelling idea.

The SPOKEN Word: What do our students have to say?
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn about a variety of free tools (i.e. SCREENR, JING, VOICE THREAD) that can be used to orally capture students' thoughts and responses. These tools can also be used as a convenient and effective method for instructors to disseminate feedback and to deliver various announcements.
Anyone who wants to vocalize an announcement (versus typing it) or wants to create short training videos will find this session helpful.

Blackboard's Content Collection is a built-in virtual hard drive that allows instructors to store course materials for easy access and deployment in a course(s). Instructors can link course content items in a course to their course's Content Collection. When an Instructor changes a content item in the Content Collection, all links to the item reflect those changes.
