Open campus forums to be held for Arts and Sciences dean candidates

The Office of Human Resources and the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs invite the campus community to help determine the future leadership for the Arts and Sciences Division. Faculty and staff are invited to attend forums for the two finalists for the Arts and Sciences Dean position. The two candidates in the running are Karen Muir, Columbus State Arts and Sciences interim dean, and Maria “Mary” Marron, professor and chair of the Department of Journalism at Central Michigan University.
The candidates will be available to answer questions about themselves and provide their vision for Arts and Sciences and Columbus State as follows:

Cascading registration periods just ahead, semesters resources available

logoFor the first time at Columbus State, registration will open for three terms within a 45-day  period. Facing scheduling opportunities for spring and summer quarters and autumn semester in a brief time frame, students may need additional assistance with planning ahead. Expect increased demand for student services, especially registration and advising, in the coming weeks. Students will be receiving a variety of communications about the multiple registration periods soon.

*Summer Quarter 2012 will be slightly shorter than normal (9 weeks instead of 11) due to the earlier start of Autumn Semester 2012. Students and advisors might want to consider this timing when planning and scheduling for summer quarter.

First semester-based catalog and other resources

To assist with Autumn Semester registration, the 2012-2013 College Catalog should be available online by late February. The printed catalog is expected to be available shortly thereafter.

The semesters website has the latest information and resources available to students and others. This website, as well as the intranet site, and wiki, are great places for faculty and staff to visit for S2S updates.

While students continue to receive semesters-related emails and other communications, they will benefit from your mentioning the coming transition often. Please share reminders about semesters in class, on course syllabi, and via Blackboard. If you would like a poster for your classroom, please contact Valerie Wilson. If one is already posted, please allow it to remain as long as possible.

S drive to be updated, expanded

Information Technology will soon quadruple the space and update the online interface to your home directory, the S drive, beginning Saturday, January 21.

The biggest change you will notice is in the online file access here.  When accessing online storage you will find a clickable “menu” that will direct you to the appropriate location for your home directory or your departmental shared drives.

Online file access will be presented using a new product called the Microsoft Unified Access Gateway. It is a very intuitive file and folder interface, but if you have questions about it, a link to instructions is posted on the menu page, or you may contact the help desk at ext. 5050.

After home directories are moved, the departmental shared directories will be moved. This will be done by assigned System Administrators who will work directly with individual departments to copy and reassign correct rights to the departmental shared drives. Home directory size will increase four times from 500 megabytes to 2 gigabytes.

Computer security training offered

Rob Clifford, Information Security, will hold bi-monthly computer security awareness training during lunch hours, beginning Wednesday, January 11.The sessions will run from noon to 1 p.m. in CT 107. The second session is scheduled for Monday, January 23. In the sessions, Clifford will cover the do's and don'ts of using your computer, smartphone and the Internet (defensive computing), identity theft, emerging trends, and more. It will be an open discussion environment, so if you have questions during the training, you will be able to just ask them!

When it snows, Physical Plant is ready!

snow photoThe Physical Plant Department is ready for snow, but we still need your help to make it a safe campus for everyone. Here are some tips to help keep you safe this winter:

flake When Ice Melt (a product used on sidewalks and stairs) and water mix, it can create a very slippery floor surface inside the doors of the buildings. Please take care when walking on any wet floors in the buildings. Use the walk-off mats when available. Also, please use the handrails when using stairs either outside or inside the buildings.

flakeOn days when we have snow, please do not try to park on campus before
6:30 a.m. This will impede snow removal operations. When you do arrive, please park in an area that has been cleared and is away from any current plowing operations.

flakeIn order to remove snow, the department uses many pieces of equipment. Be aware that this equipment will move in many directions to complete the snow removal. Please avoid walking or driving near this equipment while it is operating.

Spots available in Student Support Services

logoDo you know a student who could benefit from Trio/Student Support Services?
The Student Support Services program has spots available for new participants. The program offers academic advising, assistance with the financial aid process, tutoring, success workshops, cultural events and individualized support and encouragement to each participant.

Eligible students are currently enrolled Columbus State students who are:

  • First-generation college students

  • Pell Grant-eligible students who are determined to be low income by the U.S. Department of Education

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents

  • Full-time students, working toward a degree or with intent to transfer

  • In good academic and financial aid standing

Gruber recognized for service

Jeff Gruber, right, accepts his certificate from Dale Forton, president of the Professional Avaiation Maintenance Association.

Jeff Gruber, program coordinator, Aviation Maintenance Technology, was recognized for his service to the industry at the Central Ohio Professional Aviation Maintenance Association's (COPAMA) Holiday Dinner by Dale Forton, president of the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA).

Gruber is the vice-chairman for PAMA and chairman of the Government and Technical Issues Committee. He also serves on the Board of Directors for COPAMA. Gruber was recently appointed to the FAA's Mechanic Testing Standards Advisory Committee as a representative for PAMA and Columbus State to review and update the FAA's testing standards for aircraft mechanics.
