Student conduct coordinator helps keep campus safe

Kellie Brennan uses a balanced approach and an outstanding working relationship with faculty, staff and administration to handle difficult student situations in her role as Student Conduct Coordinator in the Student Life Department.
“Kellie makes a significant difference everyday in her job,” said nominator Dr. Mark Querry. “She always has a large group of students whose enrollment might be questionable due to safety issues,” he said. “She helps keep our campus safe.”
For her work in student conflict resolution, Brennan was named July Staff Employee of the Month in a ceremony held July 6.
“As a member of the Behavior Intervention Team, she responds quickly to crises or pressing situations,” said Querry. “She is very thorough and turns most situations into teaching-learning experiences for the students so as not to alienate them. She also goes the extra mile by volunteering to train campus departments on student conduct issues,” said Querry.
“Over the past few quarters Kellie has increased overall campus awareness on the importance of reporting student issues of concern before they escalate,” said her supervisor Wayne Cocchi, Interim Dean of Student Life. “Last year she was instrumental in rewriting the college’s Student Conduct Policy. We are proud to have her as part of the Student Life and Columbus State family!”
Delaware Campus Birthday Celebration!
Come celebrate our Delaware Campus’ first anniversary on Tuesday, July 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Moeller Hall! It was just over one year ago that we cut the ribbon on the new academic center in Delaware, and enrolled our first students into their classes for Fall Quarter 2010. The Delaware community has welcomed us with open arms and we want to celebrate the hard work of students, staff, faculty and administrators who are all contributing to our thriving new campus.
After a few words from President Harrison, and Deans Angelo Frole and Jan Rogers, we will host a big cookout on the patio with birthday cake, a memory wall to sign, and party favors for everyone that helped make our first year on the Delaware Campus a huge success!
Everyone is invited to this free event, so make sure to circle July 19 on your calendar and stop by for the Delaware Campus First Birthday Celebration!
The Grand Opening of the Delaware Campus was held on June 28, 2010 when we cut the ribbon and had a big party to open Moeller Hall!
Foundations of Excellence to celebrate accomplishments
The nine dimension committees for the College’s Foundations of Excellence program have completed their reports and submitted recommendations for action items that will improve our students’ first year experience. On Friday, July 15, the Foundations of Excellence task force will convene as a whole to review and prioritize action items and of course to celebrate all of the dimension teams’ hard work!
During the meeting, dimension committee members will meet as cross-functional teams to discuss recommendations from each of the nine dimensions. The day will culminate in an electronic vote, allowing attendees to indicate which action items they feel are the most important for the college to initiate to reach our goals for our first-year students.
Phase II of the Foundations of Excellence Program will begin in early August. Current committee members will be invited to continue serving for Phase II, however, there will be open spaces for others who may be interested in serving. The college’s Degree Audit Report System (DARS) will be unavailable for use July 11–17 due to planned maintenance related to the semester conversion.

Recipes must be submitted by Friday, July 29 for inclusion in the Columbus State Cookbook and eligibility to win the Bookstore gift card. International student program seeks mentor families
Columbus State is now approaching our third year hosting students in the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program. The new group of students will arrive in August, and the Office of Diversity, Travel Abroad and TRIO Programs is seeking mentor families to welcome the students.
Last year’s CCI students arrive at Port Columbus and are welcomed by Vanessa Kumar and Renée Hampton.
This year, Columbus State will host three students from Pakistan, two students from Indonesia, and one student from South Africa. The students will attend Columbus State for three quarters and live in the city for a total of 10 months. Part of the program requirements ask that each student be matched with a mentor family.
The goals for the mentor families are:

Welcome the student and aid in the “settling in” phase when students first arrive in the U.S.

Invite the student to participate in a few activities during their first weeks on campus.

Be available for initial transportation or shopping trips.
-
Provide the student with access to an American household so they can learn about and be a part of some of the common daily activities typical of an American family.

Share important U.S. holidays with students.

Help student practice English conversation.
Other items to consider:
-
Students have their own apartments; they do not live with their mentor families.

Students receive a stipend each month for their expenses; mentor families are not expected to cover student expenses.

Students in the cohort range in age from 23 -31, so their needs are different from traditional college age students and should focus more on cultural experiences. Ideally, you will learn as much from your student as they learn from you!
The role of a fully engaged mentor greatly enriches the experiences of students. We hope that you will consider being an ambassador to students who are preparing for a life-changing program.
