The first annual Spring Fling on the Delaware Campus was held Tuesday, with a lot of fun had by all! The event had to be moved indoors due to rain, but there was plenty of room in the Moeller Hall lobby for spinning the Cougar Prize Wheel. Nancy Cleland, Institutional Advancement, keeps an eye on the wheel as two students try to win concert tickets. All proceeds from the $1-a-spin wheel went to Operation Feed. More than $320 was raised at the Delaware and Columbus Spring Fling events.

Service Learning Roundtable involves Columbus State faculty, agencies

Faculty members Traci Haynes, Psychology, and Rebecca Mobley, Social Sciences, hosted representatives from nine Columbus-based nonprofit organizations and service agencies May 13 at the Partners in Engaged Learning roundtable discussion.

The purpose of the roundtable was to work toward developing sustainable and mutually beneficial service learning partnerships. Haynes and Mobley incorporate service learning into their curriculum and find it to be “one of the most valuable strategies for engaging students and encouraging their interest in the developmental and cultural issues” that they cover in their respective courses.

Those attending the meeting included participants from the Homeless Families Foundation, LifeCare Alliance, Children's Hunger Alliance, Monroe Alternative Middle School, Westside Free Store, US Together, Ohio Hispanic Coalition, United Way of Central Ohio, and Volunteers of America.

Also attending the roundtable were Columbus State faculty members David Tom, Psychology; Irene Petten, Social Sciences; and Lisa Briggs, Business Programs.

Financial Wellness seminar offered

Financial Planning: Part 2 will be taught by Jill Cadotte, CPA, CTFA, instructor Columbus State’s Finance Department on Wednesday, May 25, from 12 -1 p.m. in CT107.  The seminar will be teleconferenced to the Delaware Campus in DA Room129.

Points toward the Wellness Incentive Program will be available for attending this seminar. RSVP by contacting Nichole Bowman-Glover, Wellness coordinator, or call ext. 3989.

Upward Bound students volunteer at Race for the Cure

Columbus State’s Upward Bound students and staff members lent their heart and hands to help their community at the Komen Race for the Cure, May 14. Shortly after the race, Upward Bound members went to work on cleaning up the streets. As many race participants were leaving the race and celebrations were coming to a close, the students and staff provided a service that is often overlooked, but in great need after an event with over 50,000 participants.

Twenty Upward Bound staff members and students volunteered for two hours providing the equivalent of 40 hours worth of work. Upward Bound is a pre-college program for students who are potential first-generation college students and/or from low-income families. The program provides college-readiness services for a successful transition from high school into college.

Social Sciences Technology Brown-Bag offered Friday

A brown-bag session called Blackboard 9 Tricks and Techniques will be offered Friday, May 20 at noon in TL 114. During this session you will learn some secret tricks and techniques to make Blackboard 9 work better for you! This session will help you be a more efficient and effective user of Bb9.  There will be time for questions and individual assistance as well.

Ford ASSET student places third in competition

Robert Helfrich, a Ford ASSET and PSEO student at Columbus State, placed third in the state of Ohio at the Ford AAA Student Auto Skills Contest. The contest was held May 13 in Dayton. 

The competition required students to diagnose and repair a 2012 Mustang that had approximately 10 customer concerns—in less than 90 minutes. Helfrich and teammate Cody Mack, from Eastland Career Center, both seniors, will graduate in June. They were coached by Eastland Career Center instructor Aaron Edwards.  Helfrich attended Columbus State during Winter and Spring quarters as a PSEO student. He is employed by Ricart Ford, where he works as an apprentice technician as part of the Ford ASSET program curriculum. 

Strickland speed paints Johnny Depp

The newest Pirates of the Caribbean movie opens this weekend and Gene Strickland, coordinator of the Digital Photography program, has found a unique way to usher in the event. He created a digital painting of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow!

The painting serves as a teaching tool in Strickland’s classroom. It took 18 hours to complete and four more hours to edit into a five-minute time lapse “speed painting.” See it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O4CzXzwcZo.
