Going Zome
At the May 11 Arts & Science Faculty Spring Symposium, Julie Halas talks about the Zome system and its uses in teaching geometry. The Zome system refers to the mathematics underlying the physical construction system. The uses of Zome are not restricted to pure mathematics. Other uses include the study of engineering problems, especially steel-truss structures, the study of some molecular, nanotube, and viral structures, and as an artistic medium.
Theater students to perform “Reckless”
Theatre Columbus State’s spring production of Reckless by Craig Lucas opens Wednesday, May 18, in Nestor Auditorium for a five-performance run. Reckless is directed by Frank Barnhart.
The play revolves around Rachel, who is at home for Christmas Eve when she is informed by her strangely silent husband that he has hired a hit man to kill her. He urges her to flee for her life. She escapes out the kitchen window, embarking on an adventure that brings her to the doorstep of Lloyd Bophtelophti, who has changed his name to avoid alimony payments and who now lives with a paraplegic named Pootie, who also pretends to be deaf in order to get double disability. Rachel wins $100,000 on a TV game show and begins a series of zany escapades involving numerous psychiatrists and an ill-fated reunion with her husband.
The play is free and open to the public. Performances are Wednesday–Saturday, May 18-21, at 8 p.m. A special matinee will be held on Thursday, May 19 at 3 p.m.
Reminder: Shredding at Spring Fling
Iron Mountain shredding service will be on campus May 18, from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. during Spring Fling to conduct in-person secure shredding. The truck will be in parking Lot 3E during this time.
Patzer earns doctorate
Suzanne Patzer, interim director in Instructional Technologies & Distance Learning, has earned an Ed.D. from Walden University in Administration Leadership for Teaching and Learning. Her doctoral study was titled "The Ohio Learning Network and the Diffusion of Technology to Higher Education (1999 - 2008)." Patzer also holds a master’s degree in Learning and Technology from Western Governor's University.
Adjunct Faculty Advanced Learning Program to be held July 8, 29 and Aug. 19
The annual Adjunct Faculty Advanced Learning Program is learner-centered, featuring a variety of activities that are relevant to the participants. Session topic areas include instructional technologies, advanced pedagogy, learning styles and classroom management. The sessions will be held all day on July 8, July 29 and August 19. Attendance is required for all three days. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided for all three meetings.
This event is sponsored by the Center for Teaching & Learning Innovation on behalf of the Instructional Services Division and will be held on the Columbus State Downtown Campus.
The program is open to all adjuncts who have a current and/or Summer Quarter 2011 teaching assignment. Dr. Carol Himelhoch, associate professor at Cleary College and a specialist in adjunct faculty development, will lead the
program. The sessions are based on Ken Bain's book What the Best College Teachers Do and will enable participants to:

Develop an understanding of learning styles and their application to teaching.

Use assessment tools to measure general learning outcomes.

Integrate technology into the teaching-learning process.
-
Share rewarding and challenging classroom experiences with colleagues.

Participate in an online learning community hosted by Dr. Himelhoch.

Complete a final project applying workshop skills in the classroom.

Tutoring discussion to be held May 20
A brown-bag discussion focused on individuals who tutor Columbus State students in any form will be held on Friday, May 20, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in WD 402.
Faculty members who have attended recent conferences on tutoring will share the special techniques they learned at the conference. Join in the discussion and feel free to bring your lunch to enjoy while the informal presentations are made. Refreshments and a snack will be provided. The brown-bag discussions are funded by the Title III Strengthening Institutions grant. For more information contact Dr. David Reedy at ext. 2232.

Strike Gold with Data in Grant Proposals
Have you ever heard the saying, “He who has the gold makes the rules”? Well, it’s certainly true with grants. Funders want applicants to present compelling cases and they reward those who do with “the gold.” So how do you make a grant proposal compelling? You do it with data. With funding decreasing, competition increasing, and time in short supply, you can’t afford to be noncompetitive.
The Grants Office is offering interactive workshops where you will learn different methodologies for collecting data based on grant proposal specifications, what types of data you may want to use, how data can document success, and how to locate different data sources.
Please join us and learn from Columbus State’s resident research analyst, Rosemary Gliem, Ph.D. Seating is limited to 20 people per workshop and preregistration is required.

Annual Spring Fling to be held May 17 and 18
Spring Fling will be held at the Delaware Campus on Tuesday, May 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the patio and on the Downtown Campus on Wednesday, May 18 in the main courtyard during the same hours.
Spring Fling features contests, games, balloon art, caricature artists, vendors, and a delicious cookout by the Hospitality Management students. Student organizations and college departments will provide information and giveaways. Spin the Cougar Wheel for $1 and you might win a pair of concert tickets to one of
more than 30 concerts at the LC and Newport Music Hall! All money raised goes to Operation Feed. The concerts being offered are:
