Diane Jones
Office associate serves as mentor and more
As office associate in the Dean of Enrollment Services office, Diane Jones often advises students on simple matters of paperwork and student services. But it’s her willingness to go beyond that to assist and mentor students throughout their Columbus State career that has earned her the May Staff Employee of the Month award.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that Diane has singlehandedly supported a number of students through tough times and kept them on track to achieving their educational goals,” said Marty Maliwesky, dean of Enrollment Services.
“A case in point is Diane’s recent support of a young single mother faced with the prospect of dropping out due to housing uncertainties and financial hardship. Diane took the young lady under her wing, and actually housed her and her young child until she could get herself back on her feet. This type of selflessness is not simply a sign of a dedicated employee, but rather of a special human being.”
“Diane helps any student she comes in contact with,” said nominator Denise Flowers. “If she is just walking through a building and a student looks lost, she will assist them and create a relationship. She will research student accounts for errors in financial aid, help students with restrictions on enrollment, and check back with students she has helped. She just wants to get students into school and keep them there!” said Flowers.

“Tuneful Tuesdays” start May 10
It’s too good to keep secret—there are some very talented musicians studying here at Columbus State!
For some time, informal performances on Tuesday afternoons have taken place, but now the music department is expanding their Tuneful Tuesday performances to include a monthly Bach’s Lunch performance. In May, Bach’s Lunch will feature student performers from the Vocal Techniques and Basic Keyboard classes. The half-hour performance will begin at noon on Tuesday, May 10, in TL 123, the ensemble rehearsal room.
Bring a brown bag, or just take a lunchtime break with some good music performed by members of the Columbus State community. Tuneful Tuesdays will continue with late afternoon and early evening performances in the weeks ahead, and another Bach’s Lunch coming in June.
HPC Boot Camp offered this summer
The Human Performance Center will offer a fitness “boot camp” Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 5-6 p.m. starting June 28. The boot camp runs through September 8.
Current HPC fitness clients can sign up for the boot camp for $15; non-HPC clients will pay $30. The first day to sign up for the summer boot camp is May 9, in person in the HPC in Delaware Hall Room 083. Enrollment is limited.
Nominations open for the 2011-2012 Staff Advisory Council

Members of the Staff Advisory Council must attend a monthly meeting on the second Thursday of each month and report back to staff in their area about issues presented to the council. Members will also be asked to serve on a subcommittee, which will meet as needed throughout the year.
Cougar Golf captures OCCAC Championship and league title

The Columbus State Golf Team continued their 2011 league success by taking the
Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Championship and also winning outright the OCCAC league title over second place Cincinnati State. The event was held this past weekend in Perrysburg, Ohio, at Belmont Country Club on a soggy and cool day.
Columbus State fired a team score of 626 (320-306) which placed them ahead of Cincinnati State 634 (325-309), Owens 639 (329-309) and Lakeland 726 (371-355).

of Cincinnati State was second, shooting a 78 and 75. Columbus State
player Ben Tuttle was named OCCAC Player of the Year, and Drew Leopold
and Andy Henehan were named to the All-League First Team. Named to the
All-League Second Team were Cougars Dan Martina and John Sharp.
Columbus State will now move on to the NJCAA Division II, Region 12 event held at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek, Mich., on May 8 and 9. Good luck Cougar golfers!
Students named to All-Ohio Academic Team

Columbus State students Mariam Bahova and Lisa Duling were named to the All-Ohio Academic Team April 28 at a luncheon held in the Ohio Statehouse. Fifty-six students from Ohio’s 23 community colleges were recognized at the event.
The All-Ohio Academic Team provides statewide recognition and cash scholarships to outstanding two-year college students. To be eligible, students must be nominated by their college president to the All-USA Academic Team. Nominees must be eligible to graduate during the 2010-2011 academic year and have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.25.
Winners are selected on the basis of academic performance, demonstration of leadership, and community service involvement.
Mariam Bahova, 23, was named to the All-Ohio Academic First Team. She is an Associate of Science major who hopes to continue her education to become a medical doctor. She currently holds a 3.91 grade point average. Mariam works as a Student Ambassador, assisting with many campus and community events including campus tours, blood drives, poll worker recruitment, Columbus State’s first statewide student leadership conference, Taste the Future, Autism Awareness Bowl-a-Thon and Hope Street Kids. She is an international student from Guinea in West Africa.
Lisa Duling, 23, was named to the All-Ohio Academic Third Team. She is a marketing major who hopes to earn a bachelor’s degree and work in marketing design. She currently holds a 3.67 grade point average. Lisa works as an administrative assistant part time while she attends college. She has been working since she was 13 and takes a fulltime schedule of classes at Columbus State. She leads a book club, and organized a Relay for Life team that raised $1,000 to aid cancer research, in honor of her late friend Emily.
Shredding truck comes May 18
Iron Mountain will be on campus on May 18, from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. during Spring Fling to conduct in-person secure shredding. If you have stacks of personal papers either at home or in your office space, this is the time to destroy them properly. Rain or shine, Iron Mountain’s truck will be in parking lot 3E during this time.

Learn about Second Life
Are you interested in learning how to use the popular online virtual world, Second Life, as an assessment tool or a platform for office hours? If so, mark your calendar for Friday, May 13, from 2-4 p.m. in Franklin Hall Room 310. During this hands-on workshop, participants will discover how Second Life can be used to support course content and to build community among students. Additionally, attendees will create their own avatars, learn basic movements, get important resources and will be given access to Columbus State Island.
