On Earth Day, Columbus State using 11% less energy,
reducing pollution
In honor of Earth Day April
22, Columbus State has been able to show clear evidence of across-the-board
energy reductions. Consumption in 2010 dropped almost eight percent over the
prior year. That’s on top of a three-percent reduction in 2009. The figures
are impressive considering the college has witnessed a double-digit increase
in students over the same period.
In its attempt to identify “Best Practices,” the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has already recognized Columbus State as having one of the 25 best climate commitment plans. As part of a strategic goal, the college added automatic light sensors, fluorescent lights, more efficient boilers and focused on better management of hoods in science labs.
Energy use and pollution have also been reduced outdoors. Sustainable landscape practices were instituted on our 85-acre downtown campus. The plan uses alternatives to maintaining traditional grass lawns. They include such things as planting wildflowers, meadow grasses and other groundcovers. Native plants and grasses requiring less maintenance were also used on the Delaware Campus when it opened in 2010.
The overall goal is to reduce lawn mowing by at least 60 percent. Studies have shown that over the course of one year, a single gas mower can spew more than 80 pounds of smog-causing pollutants. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that one gas mower running for an hour emits the same amount of pollutants as eight new cars driving 55 mile per hour for the same amount of time.
These outdoor initiatives will also allow students in the new sustainable landscape program to observe and track results of these alternatives to highly-maintained lawns and gardens.
Operation Feed campaign to kick off on In-Service Day
The Staff Advisory Council hopes you will join them again this year for the Annual Operation Feed Campaign, which kicks off tomorrow at In-Service. There are two ways to donate—by bringing donations to the Benefits Fair, or by making a virtual donation online here: http://fooddrive.midohiofoodbank.org/goto/cscc .
For every five canned food items donated at In-Service, you will receive an entry in the drawing for prizes that include tickets to the Steve Miller Band and The Decemberists concerts!
The most-needed food items include pasta meals in a can, canned fruits, tuna, canned vegetables, canned meat, soup, and peanut butter.
Donation boxes will be placed on campus. If your location desires a box, please contact Betty Richardson for pickup at In-Service. The campaign runs through Friday, May 20.

There are many reasons why both staff and administrators need to document performance on an on-going basis. While it is important for purposes of performance reviews, it is also necessary to enhance organizational capacity. Start preparing to complete your Annual Self-Review. Join us for a discussion of ideas and best practices for what to document and how to document performance for ourselves and others. Feel free to bring your lunch!
When: Tuesday, April 26 -11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
