Read-In Chain to be held Feb. 7
The English Department will host the annual National Read-In Chain in honor of Black History Month on Monday, February 7, from noon-2 p.m. in the Nestor Hall West Lounge.
The English Department invites students, faculty, and staff to participate in this literacy initiative, co-sponsored by the National Council for Teachers of English and the NCTE Black Caucus, by selecting and reading works of African American authors, poets, and orators. Original creative works are also encouraged.
Students of Indianola Alternative Middle School will also present original poetry at the Read-In, based on the work of inventor George Washington Carver.
Columbus State banking service moving to US Bank
Columbus State is in the process of moving its banking services from Huntington National Bank to US Bank. Reimbursement checks have been issued from the new US Bank account for the past few weeks, as some of you may have noticed. Next week’s (Jan. 31) payroll checks will be issued from US Bank for the first time, so checks will need to be cashed at US Bank. If you currently bank with Huntington, your direct deposit may not post earlier than pay day as it has previously. You should see no other changes that will directly affect you. Questions about the banking change should be addressed to Human Resources at ext. 2408.
iPads in Education: Introduction, basics, open discussions, and brain storming
Did you know that between April and December of 2010 more than seven million iPads were sold? At first, many people around the world were baffled by Apple's iPad. Yet today the iPad is at the center of many business, educational, and personal discussions about what it is and how it can be applied to how we now work, learn and live.
If you are interested in what an iPad is and how iPads are currently being used, this is a session you won’t want to miss! The session is open to all employees, even if you do not own an iPad (or tablet computing). Please join us and gain better insight from fellow faculty and staff members who are early adopters of this life-changing technology. (Note: iPads will not be available for all participants during this session. If you have an iPad, please bring it!)

Campus invited to Sustainability Committee meeting with MORPC
The Sustainability Committee invites the campus community to attend a meeting Tuesday, February 1 at 2:00 p.m. in WD 409. Jerry Tinianow with the Center for Energy and Environment at the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) will speak about Eco Summit 2012 (September/October 2012) which will be hosted in Columbus. The Eco Summit is expected to draw nearly 2,000 international scientists, including the world’s top 30 ecologists, restoration scientists and environmental policy specialists. Come to the meeting to hear more about the Summit, and other initiatives from the MORPC Center for Energy and Environment.
Volunteers needed for Central District Science Day March 19
Columbus State will host the Ohio Academy of Sciences Central District Science Day on Saturday, March 19. Approximately 500 students from local area middle and high schools will present their science projects in hopes of advancing to the state competition in May. Volunteers are needed to judge these projects and to assist in the smooth operation of the activities.
Judges will be needed from 8 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. If you have never judged before, don’t worry! An orientation session will assist you. All judging is done in pairs and inexperienced judges are paired with an experienced judge.
Additional volunteers are needed to assure smooth operations during the event. Times of service will vary. Volunteers help students find their display sites, assist in registration, tally up the scores, assist the judges by collecting score cards, and act as hall monitors to maintain order and security. There is a volunteer job for every person regardless of science training.
This is an excellent community service opportunity so come and make it a success.

Christopher’s Restaurant reopens for Winter Quarter
Christopher's, a student-run dining room for faculty, staff and guests, will open for service on Thursday, January 27. Christopher’s will serve lunch every Thursday from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Eibling Hall Room 05 through the end of the quarter. Stop in Thursday, when the special will be roast pork loin or meatloaf plus lots of side dishes including mashed or sweet potatoes, soup, salads and peanut butter pie for dessert! Center for Workforce Development
Courses through the Center for Workforce Development are now available to employees participating in PERFORMs at no cost to the department or to employees. Employees will be able to access courses such as: Legendary Customer Service, Achieving Success with Difficult People or Introduction to Microsoft Project.
All courses must be approved by the supervisor and be identified as part of the Development Goal(s) on the PERFORMs Planning Guide. While training seminars can be an excellent way to develop skills or increase knowledge, it is not the only format for development. In some cases cross-training, job shadowing, interviewing experts and reading books or articles can be just as effective. This depends heavily on the learning objective and learning style. In all cases, it is important to identify not only the development goal and format for learning, but also how that learning will be used or impact the work of the employee.
