Associate “knows the system”—and the students

“Jeff’s attitude is infectious and he inspires others with his refusal to settle for marginal results.”

-Dick Bickerstaff

Because he is a graduate of the Electronic Engineering Technology, Jeffrey Curran knows what it’s like to be a student and he knows the system. It’s that inside scoop that helps him “go above and beyond on a daily basis,” according to Dean Bortz, assistant professor in Construction Sciences, who nominated Curran for Staff Employee of the Month.

Curran was presented with the September SEOM Award in a ceremony held Wednesday attended by his colleagues and President Harrison.

Curran, office associate for both the Construction Sciences and Engineering Technologies departments, “does things before you even ask him,” according to Bortz. “Recently, he made a special trip to get some materials for a class so the students would have an authentic learning experience. We told him that the faculty would be able to work around the problem, but he responded that the students come first, and they deserve the best,” said Bortz.

“Some of the students in our departments have been told they were not ‘college material’ before they came to Columbus State,” continued Bortz. “Jeff makes it his job to help them work through the processes and to encourage them. He makes a big difference every day, not just once in a while.”

“Jeff Curran is the department problem solver related to sourcing and procurement of materials,” said Chairman Dick Bickerstaff. “Jeff’s attitude is infectious and he inspires others with his refusal to settle for marginal results.”

First students complete new energy conservation program
graphic of homeThe Construction Sciences and Engineering Technologies Department awarded the first group of completion certificates in Facilities Energy and Conservation Management September 7.

This new, four-course certificate program was launched as a series of special topics courses in Summer Quarter 2009 aimed at technical skills and management techniques for the burgeoning sustainability marketplace. The courses cover an introduction to sustainable technology and careers, weatherization, insulation and thermal imaging, building auditing and commissioning, and managing alternative energy sources.

The five students who earned the certificate are already working and applying their new skills with AEP and local insulating and weatherization firms, according to Dean Bortz, assistant professor in Construction Sciences.

A new group of students will begin the certificate program in September with a class in Introduction to Sustainability. Winter Qarter 2011 they take Weatherization, and in Spring Quarter, it’s Auditing Commissioning. They will complete the certificate in Summer Quarter 2011 with Alternative Energy Management.
