Bringing down the roof!

Work began Wednesday to remove the old entrance area to Columbus Hall, the ERC. Renovation to the building includes moving the entrance to a new location on the lower level. Exterior renovations began last spring, and interior renovations are going on simultaneously. Students are currently entering the building through east and west entrances. The library remains open throughout the renovation project.

Fee Waiver deadline approaches
The deadline for Employee/Dependent Fee Waivers for Autumn Quarter 2010 is Tuesday, September 14. A Request for Fee Waiver form must be turned in to Human Resources by 4:30 p.m. on that date to guarantee that fee waivers will be processed before late fees are assessed.

You may also first pay your fees and be reimbursed within 30 days from the start of the quarter by completing the Request for Fee Waiver form and submitting an official payment receipt  to Human Resources by October 22. If you have questions, please contact Susan Thompson at ext. 2406.

 

	Music ensembles to play next week The Columbus State Woodwind Ensemble will perform its quarterly concert on Tuesday, August 31, at 4:30 p.m. in the TL 123 Music Room. The ensemble will perform the music of American composers including William Billings, Francis Hopkinson, Amy Beach, and William Grant Still. Director Thomas Lloyd will provide historical information on the music and composers. The concert is free and will last approximately 40 minutes. Also on Tuesday, August 31, the Columbus State Jazz Ensemble will hold an open rehearsal between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in TL 123. The group will perform the repertoire they are preparing for their performance at Taste the Future, September 14. The program includes Big Band selections of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and Tommy Dorsey, as well as more contemporary jazz arrangements. Listeners are encouraged to stop in and listen to some or all of the rehearsal. Class of 2014 has a different “mindset”
As the first wave of new college students arrives on campus for fall terms, Beloit College in Wisconsin has released its annual “Beloit College Mindset List.” It provides a look at the cultural touchstones that shape the lives of students entering college this fall, many of whom were born in 1992.

An excerpt: “The class of 2014 has never found Korean-made cars unusual on the Interstate, and five hundred cable channels, of which they will watch a handful, have always been the norm. Since "digital" has always been in the cultural DNA, they've never written in cursive, and with cell phones to tell them the time, there is no need for a wrist watch.”

	Bike to work? Don’t ever get stranded again! So you bicycle to work and one evening, a huge thunderstorm arrives precisely at 5 p.m.  Or you carpool with some friends and you have to work late tonight. The Mid Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC) recently unveiled a program from Ride Solutions called Guaranteed Ride Home, a free service for anyone who carpools, rides public transportation or bikes to work. Details: The GRH Program gives commuters reassurance that they will not be stranded at work in the case of an emergency or unexpected overtime. It’s a free service to anyone who carpools, vanpools, rides public transportation, bikes, or walks to and from work. Commuters must register with MORPC’s “RideSolutions” program prior to needing the service. Commuters Receive Reimbursement of 90 percent of cab fare, including a 15% tip Can be used up to four times per year How to Use the GRH Program: Be sure to register for the GRH Program today. When you register, RideSolutions will send you an information packet that will include reimbursement vouchers and complete program guidelines. If you find yourself in need of an emergency ride home, simply call the taxi service provider most convenient for you. Remember to request a receipt from the taxi driver, and mail the original receipt in with your signed GRH voucher. Volleyball Cougars to play in Central Ohio Invitational Friday, Saturday
