Second Avenue bridge project to close some nearby ramps
Starting April 12, I-71 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction for the first three weeks of a project to fix the bridge at Second Avenue and will be reduced to three lanes in each direction for the second three weeks. These lane restrictions will require several ramps to close for the entire six weeks of the project. The work is scheduled to be completed by May 23. The following information comes from ODOT:

Southbound Ramp Closures
11th Avenue ramp to I-71 south
5th Avenue to ramp I-71 south

Southbound Ramp Detours
17th Avenue to I-71 south or Summit Street to I-670 east to I-71 south.

Northbound Ramp Closures
Broad Street to I-71 north (Broad Street to I-670 west will remain open)
Long Street ramps to I-71 north

Northbound Ramp Detours
4th Street north to I-670 east to I-71 north.

How to Get Through the Construction
Consider an alternate route around the project:

• I-670 to I-270
• US 23
• SR 3
• Other local roads

If you are interested in volunteering for the Spring In-Service Day on April 23, the committee is looking for you! Moderators are needed for the day's breakout sessions. Once the list of volunteers is complete, assignments will be emailed to volunteers.

 

	Spring book study focuses on autism spectrum Have you ever had a student who: Had better recall than you do? Knew much more about a particular subject than you? Is extremely perseverant, especially about things important to them? Has a strong vocabulary, but poor use of language Seems to struggle in group work Is strongly visual and/or often has precise memory for rhythm and music? If you have, then you may have had a student on the autism spectrum. If you haven’t yet, you are likely to soon have neuro-diverse students coming your way. Data for 2007 show that one in every 150 children is now being diagnosed with a form of autism. In 2008 it was estimated that 4 million people with autism would be entering the workforce in the next decade. Here at Columbus State the “wave” has already reached our shore: The number of autistic students registering with Disability Services doubled between the 2007-08 and the 2008-09 academic years. This rising trend continues in 2009-10. If you are interested in learning more about how you can effectively teach and serve these students, then come to the Spring Book Study sponsored by the Disability Services Department and the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio. The study focuses on the recent book “Students with Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for College Personnel” (Wolf, Brown, and Bork, 2009). This study will be held in the Center for Workforce Development. You may come once a week for four weeks, on Mondays from 12-1 p.m., or Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. The dates are: Mondays: April 26, May 3, May 10 and May 17 or Tuesdays: April 27, May 4, May 11 and May 18. One of the authors, Jane Thierfeld Brown, will join the study via Skype on the May 3 and May 4 sessions. Certificates of participation will be given to those who can come all four weeks for inclusion in their professional portfolios. Weight Watchers at work to start April 13
With summer just around the corner, now is a good time to think about getting into shape. The open meeting for Weight Watchers at Work will be Tuesday, April 13, in WD Room 302 from 11:30–12:30 p.m. Each Tuesday meeting will be held in this room at this time for the next 10 weeks. If you do not know how Weight Watchers works, this is the meeting that will explain the plan to all new members. '80s & '90s Dance-Off… not just for students!
Student Activities and Employee Wellness are teaming up to host a C-R-A-Z-Y dance crew contest on May 19 at 11 a.m. in the Courtyard. According to the Student Ambassadors, this will be a “throwback dance crew competition of epic proportions!” Now you can’t let those students beat you at your own game from the 80s, can you? Most of them weren’t even BORN when you were dancing the Hustle, moon walking with Thriller, or Flash Dancing with your leggings and ripped sweatshirts, right? And Nichole Bowman-Glover, Wellness coordinator, promises anyone who participates a whole bunch of Wellness Points!

So enter your “crew” with students Korie Jenkins or Alex Nguyen at ext. 2637 by May 7 and join the “Downtown Dance Showdown.” We know you have parachute pants, headbands and a sequined glove somewhere in the basement!

 

	Battelle to present summer business camp for high school students If you have high school age students at home who are interested in business, leadership, or entrepreneurship, have them log onto www.ohiobusinessweek.org to learn more about a one-week residential program being offered on the campuses of Ohio Dominican University and Youngstown State University this summer. It’s called Ohio Business Week, and it sounds like fun (and, shhhh-educational!)
