Spring book study focuses on autism spectrum
If you have, then you may have had a student on the autism spectrum. If you haven’t yet, you are likely to soon have neuro-diverse students coming your way. Data for 2007 show that one in every 150 children is now being diagnosed with a form of autism. In 2008 it was estimated that 4 million people with autism would be entering the workforce in the next decade. Here at Columbus State the “wave” has already reached our shore: The number of autistic students registering with Disability Services doubled between the 2007-08 and the 2008-09 academic years. This rising trend continues in 2009-10. If you are interested in learning more about how you can effectively teach and serve these students, then come to the Spring Book Study sponsored by the Disability Services Department and the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio. The study focuses on the recent book “Students with Asperger Syndrome: A Guide for College Personnel” (Wolf, Brown, and Bork, 2009). This study will be held in the Center for Workforce Development. You may come once a week for four weeks, on Mondays from 12-1 p.m., or Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. The dates are: Mondays: April 26, May 3, May 10 and May 17 or Tuesdays: April 27, May 4, May 11 and May 18. One of the authors, Jane Thierfeld Brown, will join the study via Skype on the May 3 and May 4 sessions. Certificates of participation will be given to those who can come all four weeks for inclusion in their professional portfolios. Please contact Matthew Wilson, educational specialist for the Autism College Transition (ACT) program, at ext. 2050 or at mwilson7@cscc.edu if you are interested. Books are available in the Discovery Exchange for 20 percent off the list price. |

“Tools for Navigating Multi-Partner Workforce Collaboration”
As higher education works to provide innovative workforce programs for students that meet the needs of employers, workforce collaborations have become more complex. Collaboration could involve multiple higher education institutions, industry experts, key employers, government entities, labor unions, or community organizations. While there are no prescribed models for these collaborations, there is an array of techniques and tools that schools can use to succeed in these multi-partner collaborations. Join us online to explore a variety of techniques and tools that schools have used in creating and working in complex multi-party workforce collaborations in a variety of industries: transportation, manufacturing, healthcare, and utilities.

“The Students' Responsibility Toward Creating the Great Society”
Reuel BaksdaleThe great philosopher Voltaire once said that "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." This statement relates to our individual and collective responses to the societal issues of our day. Who is responsible for the national high school graduation rate of only 68 percent? Who was responsible for the genocide which visited Rwanda or the holocaust perpetuated against the Jewish people? Who is responsible for a statewide unemployment rate of over 10 percent? Are these avalanches too great to warrant individual reaction? The presentation will show how to make a difference and focus individual efforts in an effective and efficient way towards the attainment of what President Lyndon Johnson referred to as the "Great Society." Everyone wants to live in it, but who will take responsibility for its creation?
Presented by: Reuel Barksdale, B.S., M.S.A., A.B.D.
