Erney earns February SEOM

Maureen Erney, coordinator of Central Scheduling, was named the February Staff Employee of the Month for doing one simple thing: “working miracles!”
Nominator Jennifer Anderson, administrator in Curriculum Management, explained, “Marueen’s work exemplifies the Columbus State spirit of welcoming students. She maintains a positive focus on results, even when faced with great challenges.”
“This Autumn Quarter our enrollment increased by more than 16 percent, and we had more than 100 additional sections to assign,” said Anderson. “Maureen worked tirelessly to get everyone in a room during the two weeks before the quarter, and responded quickly and efficiently to changes in class size, requests for smart rooms, and other faculty needs.
“In the countdown to the start of Autumn Quarter, Marueen put in more than 20 hours of overtime to get the room assignments done, and she has stayed as late as 1 a.m. to find space for everyone!” said Anderson.
Erney graduated from CTI in June of 1983 and worked part-time in the President’s Office. When she graduated she accepted a position in the Basic Skills Learning Lab and then moved to the Financial Aid Office, working 6 1/2 years in each department. In the fall of 1996 she moved to Learning Systems and became the Central Scheduling specialist and then coordinator.
“The key to maintaining your cool under pressure is to surround yourself with positive, motivating people,” said Erney. “I have the privilege of working with a great group of people in Curriculum Management and the many others who I directly work with on a daily basis.”
Erney’s daughter Sarah is now a proud graduate of Columbus State, too, and was able to move on to Otterbein to graduate with dual degrees. “My favorite part of working at this college is the people who I consider my family and dear friends,” said Erney.

“Civility in the Classroom”
Hart earns Ph.D.Amy Hart, associate professor in Hospitality Management, earned her Ph.D. from Northcentral University in Business Administration with a specialization in Labor Relations and Organizational Leadership in November 2009. The title of Hart’s dissertation was: "Examining the Factors Resulting in Faculty Unionization at Three Ohio Community Colleges." The overall concept of the quantitative study was to determine what causes faculty to unionize and the impact that institutional leadership has on that decision.
What Happened to the AQIP Action Teams?The four initial action projects—decided by employees through Conversation Day in 2005, campus follow-up forums, and action team activities—have been completed. The recommendations, developed as a result of action project teams’ careful study, are being incorporated into campus processes and were included in our initial submission of the systems portfolio, a report to the Higher Learning Commission.
The three new action projects have been selected and are in various stages of study. These action projects have been developed within departments or groups of departments and are comprised of representative stakeholders involved in the key processes identified. This focus on stakeholder-based projects is a result of the AQIP Steering Committee’s own continuous improvement analysis. The committee determined that stakeholder ownership of process improvement projects more often results in greater commitment to the achievement of higher levels of performance.
Individuals or stakeholder groups involved in a process could gather baseline data, use tools to interpret data, and use results to make appropriate changes and document improvements. Many of you do this routinely. For example, faculty gather data from student evaluations, test scores, outcome assessments and improve course instruction as needed. Likewise the DX bookstore staff gathers customer behavior information and then adjusts the store’s layout and displays to maximize customer needs.

Winter Wellness Fest is Wednesday!Stop over to the Delaware Hall Gymnasium anytime from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 10, for the annual Winter Wellness Fest, hosted by the Human Performance Center.
You will be able to join in on fitness demonstrations, visit with more than 30 different vendors, earn points toward your Wellness Incentive Bonus, and maybe even win a door prize.
There will be a basketball shooting contest, a fitness challenge, Zumba classes, a scavenger hunt, and a canned food drive to benefit Operation Feed: Bring five cans of food and you will receive a free fitness assessment and a free personal training session with the HPC.
