	It’s not too late to join the Winter Welcome Team! Basketball Head Coach reaches 100 wins

Coaching college basketball has always been Pat Carlisle’s passion. Now he’s living the dream as he reaches a new milestone.  The Columbus State Cougars recently helped Carlisle achieve his 100th win as a head coach by defeating Henry Ford Community College (Mich.). That milestone comes after just 134 games, which is among the quickest on record in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC).  

The victory is the latest on a path that began nearly 15 years ago when Carlisle worked as a high school junior varsity head coach, while taking college classes and learning the ropes as a student coach at a community college.

“Early in my career, in both teaching and as an assistant coach, I learned  that to set up a successful junior college program for the long haul you were going to need more than basketball players,” says Carlisle. “Even going beyond the game you have to stress citizenship and academics to make it year in and year out.”  (Team members had a combined G.P.A. of 2.8 last winter quarter and they have broken every men’s basketball G.P.A. mark prior to his arrival.)

Carlisle’s first win at Columbus State occurred the first week of November, 2006.  He took his men to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament the following year where they finished runner-up in the title game.  During his third year the Cougars finished the regular season ranked No. 1 as they made it to the Elite Eight round in nationals.  Last year the team finished with a respectable 23-7 record.  They’re off to an outstanding start with a 9-1 record so far this season.

Carlisle’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wright State University and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Cincinnati.

 

	The Meyers’ father, daughter team completes new book David Meyers, data analyst in Community Education and Workforce Development, has co-authored a new book with his daughter Elise, called “Historic Columbus Crimes: Mama’s in the Furnace, The Thing & More”(The History Press).  David Meyers and Elise Meyers Walker look back at sixteen tales of murder, mystery, and mayhem culled from city history. The Other Paper’s John Petric writes, “126 pages of pithily written tales about bad folks who put Columbus on the map, criminally speaking.” Previously, David and Elise, collaborated on Central Ohio’s Historic Prisons (Arcadia Publishing).

Writing about psychological disorders focus of Kaufman’s book

Dr. Carolyn Kaufman, Assistant Professor and Lead Instructor for Technology in the Psychology Department, recently had her book “The Writer’s Guide to Psychology: How to Write Accurately about Psychological Disorders, Clinical Treatment and Human Behavior,” published by Linden Publishing (December 1, 2010).

"Thoughtful, scholarly, comprehensive and a boon to writers aiming for accuracy when depicting the world of abnormal psychology and clinical treatment," said Jonathan Kellerman, psychologist and author of the best-selling Alex Delaware mystery.

"Every writer who even thinks about creating or explaining a character with a psychological disorder should have a copy on their desk, right next to their dictionary and thesaurus,"  said Jilliane Hoffman, former felony prosecutor and author, “Last Witness,” “Plea of Insanity,” and “Retribution.”
