New Colleague user interface begins MondayThe IT Department will introduce a new Colleague user interface Monday. When Colleague users log into the system Monday morning, they will see an installation window appear, and the old Colleague user interface will be replaced with the new version. This is being done to address some issues with the compatibility of the software with the Windows Vista operating system and other minor changes.
Colleague users should know that any favorites or font/color changes that they had will be removed and will have to be redone after the installation. For more information, contact Len Gossard at ext. 5899.
Colleague Access Training for Supervisors offered Information Technology, the Data Center and Human Resources Department will facilitate a one-hour training session on Colleague access for all chairs, administrators and supervisors starting Feb. 19. The training is crucial to learn how to access Colleague for your employees, for the functioning of your departments, and for the security and accuracy of college information. This course is strongly recommended for all chairs, administrators and supervisors, as they will be responsible for the content of this material in the future. Getting down to the roots is also an important part of AQIP process improvement, and the branches of your family tree can resemble an important AQIP tool called the “Fishbone Diagram.”
The fishbone diagram is sometimes called a “cause and effect diagram” or “Ishikawa diagram” and is a continuous improvement tool used to identify the root cause of a process or problem. Creating a fishbone diagram provides a visual picture of problem categories and a breakdown of contributing causes of each problem. Process improvement teams that utilize the fishbone diagram to map out a problem will realize significant and more sustainable improvements in the process. A simple example of how a fishbone diagram works in the spirit of Valentine’s Day can be illustrated by addressing a problem(s) between a couple—a man named “Joe” who is trying to determine why his wife is not happy. Joe calls “Mr. Continuous Improvement” (CI) and asks him how he can figure out why his mate is unhappy.
Mr. CI explains that they will brainstorm and identify at least four major reasons why Joe’s mate might be unhappy, and then identify actions or activities that are contributing to each reason. Once they have identified the reasons, they can determine how to eliminate them.
After Joe’s session, he went home to work on his organization, lack of patience, lack of companionship and excessive time at work. He underwent some major process improvement! And Valentine’s Day turned out to be a much happier holiday for Joe.
Phi Theta Kappa holding bake sale FridayBe a valentine to yourself and buy something yummy from the PTK Bake Sale Friday, Feb. 13, in the lobby of TL from 9 a.m.-noon. The students are conducting the bake sale as a fundraiser for the honor society.
Student named OCCAC Player of the WeekThe Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) has selected Elise England, Center/Forward of the Cougars women's basketball team as the OCCAC Player of the Week for February 9, 2009.
England, a 6-0 freshman, scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the Cougars only game last week. She also had two assists and nine blocks. "Elise played exceptionally well in Columbus State's win over Sinclair. She is also an outstanding student, recording a 3.93 GPA during the fall,” said Head Coach Randy Crites. Elise currently has 79 points (15.8 points per game), recording 27/64 field goals and 25/33 free throws. She also has 64 rebounds, nine assists, 12 steals and 27 blocks.
Renèe Hampton, director of TRiO Programs and special assistant to the provost for diversity, was selected by the Department of Education to participate as an alternate nonfederal negotiator for the rulemaking committee to develop proposed discretionary grant program regulations.
She was nominated by the American Association of Community Colleges with a recommendation from the Council of Opportunity in Education. Hampton’s role will be to assist in the development of proposed discretionary grant program regulations.
