Vet Tech students featured in national journal
Columbus State’s veterinary technology students graced the cover of the Fall 2009 issue of NAVTA Journal, the professional journal from the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America. And inside the issue-- even more great press! The members of the Student Chapter of NAVTA were featured in an article about their club, activities, fundraisers, officers and mentorship program. The Chapter has more than doubled its membership in the past year. President of the chapter, Rob Smith, also was profiled in a story titled “Breaking the Mold.” Smith is a nontraditional student in the Vet Tech program because he is 43 years old, male, and starting his second career after graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Indiana University in 1989. Smith explains in the article that he “decided to follow my childhood dreams and pursue a career in the veterinary health care field.”

October 20: “Current Strategies for Teaching Students on the Autism Spectrum”OTAP graduates 14
State Representative Tracy Maxwell Heard was the keynote speaker at a graduation ceremony for 14 students in the Orientation to Trades and Apprenticeships Program (OTAP) September 21 in the Workforce Development Center Ballroom.
Provost Judith Scherer, Dean Jane Schaefer and OTAP Supervisor Carol Higgins also addressed the graduating class. To achieve an OTAP Certificate, the students (pictured above showing off their certificates and gift work boots) were required to take part in a ten-week course that included six hours of classroom and hands-on training five days a week. The course allows them to enter the work force in construction trades, sustainable and renewable energy jobs, weatherization and all trade apprenticeships.
