Howard named to boardDr. Marilyn Howard, associate professor in the department of Social & Behavior Sciences, has been named to the board trustees of the Columbus Historical Society.
Delaware Campus Groundbreaking to be held WednesdayThe groundbreaking ceremony for the new second campus in Delaware will be held on Wednesday, July 9 starting at 10:30 a.m. at the new campus location at the corner of Route 23 and Winter Rd. Banners will be posted at visible locations to mark the turn, and parking is available at the event. Please come and join us for this landmark occasion – no RSVP is necessary. For those who have signed up to ride the Groundbreaking Bus to the ceremony, the bus will leave from the Nestor Hall arch at 9:30 a.m.
ERC Director Bruce Massis' new book The Challenges to Library Learning: Solutions for Librarians (Routledge) has just been published. The book addresses the challenges to learning that impact all staff working in libraries. Difficulties like staffing shortages, depleted or eliminated training budgets, longer hours, greater workloads, and rapidly-changing technology can all have a negative effect on the ability—and willingness—of employees to continue job education.
The book explores common problems affecting libraries today and offers a practical philosophy of engagement that can be used to meet and defeat these challenges. This is Massis' 8th book on library-related issues. His previous books include, among others, The Practical Library Manager (Haworth), Models of Cooperation in American Libraries (K.G. Saur) and Serving Print Disabled Library Patrons (McFarland).
More than 100 guests joined the Youth and Adult Automotive Training Center (YAATC) in celebrating the graduation of eleven program completers June 20 in the Center for Workforce Development. Speakers included Kendall Lee and Marsha Saafir of Ford Motor Company and Columbus State president Val Moeller.
The eleven graduates were honored for ten months of hard work in technical and life skills training. The graduates received Columbus State gifts donated by the DX and the President’s office and watches and tee-shirts donated from Ford Motor Company.
Mario Brown, class valedictorian, received a $500 gift certificate towards tools donated by the Ford Motor Company.
The YAATC program allows disadvantaged individuals to attend college in the field of automotive technology. The eleven graduates earned a certificate in Maintenance and Light Repair, job placement and a toolbox to begin employment in the field. The program, now in its eighth year, is funded by Ford Motor Company and the Central Ohio Workforce Investment Corporation (Co-Wic).
Those departments are part of IT, and are responsible for Colleague maintenance and security. They also develop applications for Colleague and the college web site.
The departments moved on June 23 from space in Eibling Hall.
Reminder to apply to Leadership InstituteThe Columbus State Community College Leadership Institute is a nine-month leadership development experience designed to explore personal leadership and competencies related to leading change. Participation in the 2008-2009 Leadership Institute is by application only and limited to 25 selected participants. Selection will be based on an evaluation of the applicant’s readiness to engage in the leadership learning experience, and the applicant’s commitment to the time and attention required. All full-time Columbus State Community College staff, faculty, and administrators may apply. A total of 25 applications will be selected in proportional staff, faculty, and administrator categories. Applications are due to Lori McKenzie, HR office (in Rhodes Hall 115) by no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 25.

The deadline to submit a completed Petition to Graduate Form for Summer Quarter 2008 is Friday, July 11, before 4:30 p.m. in the Records and Registration Department at the Registration Windows in Madison Hall. It is acceptable to submit the Petition to Graduate Form for a student who has pending transfer credit, proficiency credit, prior learning credit, course waivers and/or course substitutions. In addition, please ask the student or a member of your department to hand carry the completed form to the Records and Registration Department if you approve the Petition to Graduate Form close to the deadline date so that it will be received in time. Colleague logins are getting simpler -- outage plannedEffective July 14, all employees with access to the Colleague system will use their Novell credentials to log in. You’ll use the same login and password to access Colleague that you use to get into your e-mail and other online services.
The change does not impact students.
To implement the change, all Colleague systems will be unavailable from 6 p.m. Saturday, July 12 until 6 a.m. Monday, July 14. CougarWeb, CATS and Colleague will be unavailable, both for faculty and students.
